Matt Pawlowski(Northwest Guilford HS) with 5 TD passes leads Guilford College to victory over Greensboro College, 77-13/Wes Gullet with “Inside GC Pride”

Guilford with 7 first half touchdowns with five on Matt Pawlowski passes and two from DeEric Bell on the ground…Three of Pawlowski’s passes went to WR Adam Smith….

Matt Pawlowski(Northwest Guilford HS), with 5 first half touchdown passes tonight was done by halftime, but Guilford College had what they needed, with the Quakers topping the Greensboro College Pride, 77-13, at Jamieson Stadium on the Grimsley High School campus…

Guilford takes the 2015 Gate City Soup Bowl and in the process starts their new season at (1-0) with a road trip to Methodist(Fayetteville, N.C.) planned for next Saturday…

Matt’s favorite target tonight was the same man he has been looking to over the recent successful Quaker seasons and that is Adam Smith, from Mocksville, by of Davie County High School…Pawlowski and Smith hooked for TD’s three times tonight and connected for 100 yards through the air and that is just Pawlowski passing to Smith, there plenty of other receivers on Matt P.’s radar screen this evening….

The Quakers set the tone for the game on their first possession of the contest when they faced a 4th and around 6 yards needed for the first and the ball on the Quakers side of the field, Guilford did not punt, they went for the first down and they got and the rest is history….The Quakers not only got the first down, they ended up with a 47-yard TD pass from Pawlowski to Smith in the process and not a bad way to get your night rolling….

The Quakers behind Pawlowski, Smith, DeEric Bell, Woodruff, Tyler Hunt and many others secured a very big victory to get their 2015 campaign off and running…

Tyler Hunt was a perfect 11-11 on his extra-point kick attempts and had many booming kickoffs that hit the end zone, but for some unknown reason, Greensboro College to bring the kicks out and the Pride usually ended up shy of the 20-yard line….Hunt handled 11 kickoffs and he handled them well and we also need to put the good work out there for a few of the Greensboro College players that had good games…

I was impressed with Ray Bridges(Southwest Guilford) and the former Cowboy wide receiver had a real nice 30-yard reception early in the first quarter on the Pride’s first possession of the game and Ray had help from his brother Herbie on defense, as we saw Herb/#4 for GC come up with several pass deflections and some near interceptions…Same story for Micah McMasters/#32 for GC as a DB, with Micah in their on pass breakups and making tackles coming up from his secondary spot on the Pride protection side of the football, playing hard-nosed defense all night long were Herbie and Micah…

Greensboro also got a good boost from RB/KR man Cortez Vernon, picked one of the GC Pride TD’s on a 1-yard run…Guilford got 60-yard punt return for touchdown from DeEric Bell and Bell added a TD on a 31-yard run…

No lack of scoring in the Gate City Soup Bowl tonight…

Matt Pawlowski had a very good game, but there is still for improvement…A few dropped passes, some passes that were off the mark and some snaps that need to more on center from the center, as they come back to Matt in the gen…Matt had some good runs tonight and most of the runs were by design and not forced and that works to your team’s developmental advantage…

We heard Kemar Batchelor’s name being called out tonight for several tackles on the defensive side of the ball and it was good to hear from the former member of the Southern Guilford Storm….

A great Gate City Soup Bowl for 2015 and not a bad way for Guilford College to their new football year under way….

As always we will have more from Guilford and Greensboro College as the night moves on….

Pride Football Suffers Setback In Soup Bowl

GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College football team opened their 2015 season under the lights on Saturday night in the 19th Annual Gate City Soup Bowl against Guilford College. The Pride found themselves down early in the game and could not recover falling by 77-13 score.

Guilford jumped out to a 42-0 lead before Greensboro was able to get on the board with a touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter of play. Mac Graham got the first scoring drive of the day started with four straight completions to move the ball to the Guilford College fifteen yard line.

Once Greensboro got into the red zone, Guilford was flagged for a defensive pass interference to give the Pride the ball first down and goal from the Quakers six yard line. After the Guilford penalty, running back Cortez Vernon chipped the ball down to one yard line following a five yard run before plunging into the end zone the next play making the score 42-6 follow a blocked point after attempt.

Guilford then responded back with a strike just before intermission to take a 49-6 lead into the break.

In their first possession of the third frame of play, Greensboro was not able to get the offense going as they were forced to punt the ball back to the Quakers following three straight plays. Guilford then found the end zone once again extending the Pride deficit to 56-6.

However, Greensboro did not give up and was able to cap off an eight play 78 yard drive with their final score of the day. Following a four yard rush by sophomore running back Famous Roberts from his own 22 yard line, Graham completed his longest pass of the day (62 yards) to Tavares Thomas to move the ball to the Quakers twelve yard line. Following a pair of short runs, Graham was able to run into the end zone on a bootleg run to the left side making the score 56-12. Scott Gaston then connected on the point after attempt making the score 56-13.

Guilford would then score the game’s final 21 points to come away with the victory.

“Guilford was the better team tonight,” Head Coach Bill Young remarked following the game. “This was not a great showing of who we are as a team and what we are about. We have to regroup as a team a have each other’s back we have a good football team that I care about, believe in, and trust in.”

“We are going to crank it back up tomorrow and find a way to get better as we have a tough Bridgewater College team coming in next weekend.”

Denzel Martin led the way for the Pride in the rushing category with 67 yards on four carries while Markez Brown rushed for 24 yard. Quarterback Mac Graham finished the day with 212 yards through the air on twelve completions. Raymond Bridges finished the day with 70 yards receiving.

  1. Matty Ice has been doing this since his days at NWG. The kid is a winnner and Guilford College is lucky to have such a talented player. If he keeps playing like this he will have the Quakers in the playoffs this year! Go Guilford!

  2. Pawlowski always makes the difficult plays look easy! Keep working hard Matt and keep proving everyone who said you weren’t good enough to play big time D-1 Ball wrong. Great to see a local kid making the Quakers relevant in Football

  3. There’s a lot of truth to what these people are saying….One of the top quarterbacks to ever come out of Guilford County…Have been following this kid since back when he was a sophomore at Northwest Guilford HS and the kid/young man has a good football mind….

  4. You guys are not giving Coach Chris enough credit!! You’ll find out next season that the new QB will do the same thing. It’s the system, OL, and few good skill players but Coach really makes it easy for players

  5. It’s nice he is having a great career @ Guilford, but let’s be real please. He is accomplishing this against D-III defenders, not D-I. NFL dratf is probably very unrealistic hype!

  6. There’s always free agency and that might be the better route for M. Pawlowski and Tyler Hunt, Guilford’s outstanding kicker/punter who trained for many years with Don Osborne, over in High Point…
