HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s soccer team continued its strong start to the season on Sunday afternoon, picking up a 2-0 win over North Florida at Vert Stadium. HPU got goals from sophomores Becca Rolfe and Michele Micciche to pick up the two-goal win.

“I was really happy with the energy the team showed to start the game today,” head coach Marty Beall said. “Our energy level and defensive effort in the first half were really strong but our offensive execution was lacking. I thought we moved the ball and created more chances in the second half but we still need to do a better job with our service into the box.

High Point improved to 4-0-2 with the win over North Florida while the loss dropped the Ospreys to 1-4-0. This is the latest into a season that HPU has been undefeated in program history.

The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of action on sophomore Becca Rolfe’s third goal in two games. The midfielder controlled a loose ball in the center of the pitch and found space 35-yards from goal before lofting a shot that snuck between the outstretched hand of the UNF keeper and cross bar for a goal.

High Point continued to push forward and found an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when sophomore Michele Micciche scored off a corner kick to put HPU ahead, 2-0. Sophomore Paige Lloyd took the corner and hit an in-swinger in front of net that Micciche got her foot to for the finish just in front of goal. The score was Micciche’s second of the season.

The Panthers dominated possession in the game and finished with a 23-6 edge in shots with an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. The team also had eight corner kicks to UNF’s one.

Freshman Emily Lyon played well in goal to pick up her third win and second shutout in three starts this season. Lyon’s best save came in the 74th minute when she came off her line to make a stop in a one-v-one situation against the Osprey’s Gabby Daudet.

High Point returns to the road next weekend to take on Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., on Friday, Sept. 11. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
