Neither of the East Carolina Pirates’ backup QB’s, Cody Keith and James Summers, played against the Towson Tigers in game one for ECU despite speculation that multiple quarterbacks might be used in the opener.

Junior quarterback Cody Keith, whose college career has been plagued repeatedly by injuries, has decided to leave the East Carolina football program, according to multiple media outlets.

James Summers(Page High School), who was recruited as a receiver but has quarterback experience and was a late addition to preseason camp, was active on the sideline at different points in the Towson game. He was warming up and talking to offensive coordinator Dave Nichol after the Pirates took a 28-13 early in the fourth quarter, but Towson answered with a touchdown and Kemp stayed in the rest of the way.

Junior Blake Kemp was given the start for last week’s season opener against Towson and Keith was listed as ECU’s backup on the pregame depth chart. But Keith was expected to be replaced on the depth chart for this week’s game at Florida by junior college transfer James Summers, who only joined the team for the final week of preseason practice.

Keith practiced with the Pirates on Tuesday, but was not on the field Wednesday, according to ECU SID Tom McClellan.

Keith’s departure leaves ECU with three scholarship quarterbacks on its 2015 roster with Kemp, Summers and true freshman John Jacobs. Phillip Nelson, who was a starter for much of two seasons at Minnesota before transferring to Rutgers and then East Carolina, is presently regarded as a walk-on player.

  1. I’m back.

I’m hoping that the second time around as a Pirate will be the charm for James! I’m rooting for him! On another note, there are a few of those Pirates from the championship team that’s doing really well at their respective colleges. Shaun Working error is doing an outstanding job! Blake is making some noise at Pembroke and DeAnthony has found his niche at FSU.He returned a punt for 40+ yards in their opener last week!
