HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s soccer team dropped its first game of the season with a 1-0 loss at Appalachian State on Friday evening in Boone, N.C.

“Overall our possession wasn’t good enough and we didn’t create enough quality chances,” head coach Marty Beall said. “That being said, we battled hard in what was was a very competitive match. You have to give credit to Appalachian State, they capitalized on a turnover to score their goal and that was the game.”

With the loss, High Point falls to 4-1-2 on the season. This is the latest in program history that the Panthers have suffered their first loss of the season. Appalachian State improves to 4-2-0 with the win.

The only goal of the game for either team came in the 57th minute when the Mountaineers’ Sam Childress received a through ball from Merlin Beckwith and beat sophomore keeper Alex Persiani with a low shot to the bottom right corner.

High Point was outshot 9-6 in the game and finished with a 4-2 disadvantage in shots on goal. The Panthers ended the game with a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Persiani and freshman Emily Lyon split time in goal with Lyon playing the first half and Persiani playing the second. Lyon ended the game with two saves while Persiani recorded one stop. Megan Roberson made two saves for ASU to record the clean sheet.

High Point continues its weekend road trip on Sunday, Sept. 13, when the team travels to Nashville, Tenn., to face Vanderbilt at 1 p.m., CT. The Commodores will be the second team from the SEC that HPU has faced this season. The Panthers previously played Georgia to a 0-0 draw at Vert Stadium in the season opener.
