GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College women’s soccer team returned to the pitch on Tuesday night. The Pride traveled down Friendly Avenue to take on their rivals Guilford College. Greensboro got on the board in the first half of play and was able to hold on down the stretch for a, 2-1, win.

After an evenly played first forty-two minutes of play, Samara Alba put Greensboro on top, 1-0, with her fourth goal of the season. Alba placed the shot in the bottom right corner of the net.

As the time ticked away in the half, the Pride kept the Quakers off the board to take a narrow 1-0 mark into the break.

The score would remain 1-0 until the 65th minute of play. Following a Pride corner kick, Alba was able to cross the ball to the far side of the box to Carleigh Roach. Roach then struck the ball just under the cross bar to extend the Pride advantage to 2-0.

Later in the half Guilford was able to break the shutout but it was not enough as the Pride held on for a 2-1 win.

Guilford held shot advantage in the contest, 15-12. Melanie Raton led the way with four shots in the game while Gabbriele Eddinger, Lauren Greeson, and Samara Alba each contributed two shots.

Brittany Morrison (4-1) picked up the win in goal while recording six saves.

“I am extremely proud of the way our girls played tonight,” Head Coach Gus Mota stated following the game. “We were able to finish on a couple of occasions to come away with an exciting win for our program. Now we have to turn our attention to conference play this weekend.”

The Pride will return to action on Sunday afternoon at North Carolina Wesleyan. The match is set to get underway at 1:00 PM. For the latest on Pride athletics, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.

College Women’s Soccer Final – Greensboro 2, Guilford 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College’s Samara Alba tallied a goal and an assist as Guilford College fell to Greensboro in a Wednesday afternoon contest inside Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center, 2-1.

The Quakers held off the Pride in the first 25 minutes as Greensboro held a 5-1 shot advantage early on. The Quakers moved to even the shot count in the remainder of the half with multiple close offensive chances inside the 18-yard box. As time ran out in the period, Alba created space with a strong dribble to the right, firing a shot from the top of the box in the 43rd minute for the match’s first score.

Both teams traded shots to start the second half with both sides playing aggressive offensively. The Pride capitalized on the pressure 65th minute when Alba flicked a pass to Carleigh Roach on the left side, booting the ball on the fly to extend the lead, 2-0.

The Quakers countered with pressure of their own and converted an opportunity into a goal in the 77th minute off a mad scramble in the box. Juliana Evans-Anfom found Annaliese Rutishauser on the right side to cut the lead in half.

Guilford earned the advantage on shots, 15-12, and on corner kicks, 8-4. Greensboro held the advantage on fouls, 13-5, including 11 second-half fouls.

Maggie Albert made three saves in net for the Quakers. Brittany Morrison stopped six shots in net for the Pride.
