HPU Volleyball Panthers Sweep St. Francis In Red Flash Classic

• Freshman Abby Broadstreet registered 10 kills for the second time in her career while also tallying eight digs and four blocks to pace the Panthers.
• Senior Annemarie Chin recorded 18 of the team’s 44 digs as HPU held St. Francis to a .101 attack percentage.
• The Panthers will go for a clean sweep of the Red Flash Classic when they take on Fordham at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

LORETTO, Pa. – Freshman Abby Broadstreet had a career day as the High Point University volleyball team bested host St. Francis (Pa.) 3-0 in the Red Flash Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (8-6) and the Red Flash (2-12) battled through a close first set (26-24) before HPU pulled away for 25-12 wins in the second and third sets.

In the win, Broadstreet tallied her second career match with double figures in kill to go with eight digs and four blocks. Meanwhile, sophomore Haley Barnes posted nine kills on a .348 attack percentage as the squad hit .284 on the afternoon. At setter, senior Gabi Mirand tallied 31 assists and two of the team’s six service aces.

Defensively, the Purple & White shut down the Red Flash’s attack holding them to a .101 attack percentage on the day. Senior Annemarie Chin controlled the match from the back row with 18 digs while freshman Jordan Hefner earned four blocks at the net.

HPU earned a +7 (44-37) margin in digs and a +8 (35-28) edge in kills.

Neither team was able to build a lead larger than four points as the Panthers earned a hard-fought 26-24 win in the first set. When HPU needed it the most, Barnes came through with four kills in just six attack attempts.

But in the second frame, High Point used the momentum from winning the first set to jump out to a 15-5 advantage. From there, the Purple & White cruised and after Broadstreet and Hefner combined for a block to close out the 25-12 victory.

Broadstreet and Chin, then, carried that Panthers to a 25-12 win in the third set to close out the team’s first road triumph. Broadstreet posted five kills and four digs in the set while Chin racked up nine digs.

The Purple & White will be right back on the floor as they wrap up the Red Flash Classic with a match against Fordham at 4:30 p.m. Saturday evening.
