GREENVILLE, S.C. – The High Point University women’s golf team put together an excellent second round Monday to finish day one at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in seventh place.

After posting an opening round 319 Monday morning, the Panthers improved on that mark by 19 strokes in the afternoon session to post a 36-hole total of 619 (319-300). The second-round score was the third-best amongst the 17-team field and gave the Purple & White excellent momentum heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Senior Tan Cheeranont continued her torrid pace of late on Monday and sits in a tie for 2nd place amongst the 90 player field. The Bangkok, Thailand, native impressed from start to finish while posting a two-round score of 147 (74-73, +3). Cheeranont posted a birdie and 15 pars in a steady second round and currently ranks t-6th in par-3 scoring (E).

“Tan continued to play good, basic golf today,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “She is not trying to wow anyone. Her goals are to get on to the green somewhere and two-putt. Her philosophy is working well for her right now. Her leadership has inspired our younger players.”

Sophomore Cayla Smith also impressed for the Panthers on day one in Greenville. The Easley, S.C., native opened with a first round 77 but improved upon that score by three strokes in round two to post a 36-hole total of 151 (+7). She carded five birdies and is t-14th in par-3 scoring (+1). Smith is tied for 14th place overall heading into Tuesday action.

Freshman Landrie Grace provided a big boost while leading HPU to the much-improved score in round two. After opening with an 85, Grace bettered that score by 10 shots in round two to card a 36-hole total of 160 (85-75). She improved 22 spots after the strong second round and is currently t-49th.

Junior Danielle Fuss also showed marked improvement in the afternoon session and is tied for 52nd with a combined score of 161 (83-78).

Freshman Patty Treevichaphan opened with a 92, but settled down to post an 82 in the second round to notch a 36-hole total of 174. She is tied for 83rd place.

“Cayla is learning to trust her strengths and using them to make birdies,” Pate Flesher said. “Danielle is maturing and taking her game management to a higher level and Landrie is realizing that being a great player means that you have to be really good at the basic stuff first. Patty played in her first collegiate tournament today and did fine. She really found her way after the first round and settled down and had a couple of birdies in her second round.”

Host East Carolina leads the field with a score of 595 (297-298), while Old Dominion (596) and William & Mary (612) round out the top-3.

HPU tees off at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow for final round action at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.

“Tomorrow there is a chance of thunderstorms and we are going to need to be patient and focus on the shots at hand,” Pate Flesher said. “It’s easy in adverse weather to let your mind wander or to get frustrated. We have played the course three times in two days and have a good game plan. I believe we are ready for whatever tomorrow holds for us.”
