College Women’s Soccer Final – #4 Lynchburg 5, Guilford 0

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Host Lynchburg College used a balanced attack in earning an early Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Guilford College, 5-0. Lynchburg entered the week ranked forth in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll.

The Hornets scored early in the third minute off of an early corner kick from Marina Clark that found the feet of Emily Maxwell to claim the early advantage. Guilford fought hard defensively and held the former top-ranked team in the country for most of the rest of the period until the 44th minute when an Elizabeth Oden corner kick found the head of McKenzie Frederick to increase the lead.

Frances Foster’s 61st minute goal and a 69th minute goal from Kelley Smith widened the gap in Lynchburg’s best period of offense during the contest. Caitlin Mertens booted in her own rebound in the 88th minute to seal the victory.

Lynchburg outshot the Quakers, 40-0, and held the edge on corner kicks, 14-0.

Maggie Albert made eight of Guilford’s ten saves in net for the Quakers while Tess Frelick earned the start and the win for Lynchburg, playing the first 68:30. Delia Losapio finished the final 21:30 of the contest for the Hornets.

The Quakers (3-6-1, 1-3 ODAC) return home Saturday, hosting Eastern Mennonite University for a 5 p.m. ODAC contest.
