College Women’s Soccer Final – Guilford 3, Emory & Henry 2

EMORY, Va. – Christian Heggie’s four-minute, two-goal burst powered the Quakers to a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Emory & Henry College, 3-2.

Both teams started the contest strong with two goals scored in the first 11 minutes. Guilford (4-6-1, 2-3 ODAC) struck first in the sixth minute on the Quakers’ first shot of the contest as Juliana Evans-Anfom fed Kelli Uresti from the right side into the box for a one-timer to take an early lead. Emory & Henry (2-7-2, 0-3-1 ODAC) responded quickly in the 11th minute as Emily Belanger fired her corner kick to the back post into the goal to level the score. After both sides traded two shots a piece, Emory & Henry fired the next seven shots as the Quakers held defensively to end the period tied.

Blair Vaughn claimed the lead for Emory & Henry in the 57th minute off a narrow angle to put the Wasps ahead, 2-1.

Evans-Anfom created offense for the Quakers a second time to respond to the Wasps’ rally in the 76th minute when she fed a pass inside the box to Heggie, who booted the one-timer in the net to even the match. Heggie quickly struck once more four minutes later, capitalizing on a loose ball inside the six-yard box to claim the lead and the win for the Quakers, 3-2.

The Wasps out-shot the Quakers, 19-11, but the Quakers held the edge on corner kicks, 6-2.

Cheyenne Grim made seven saves in net for the Quakers in the victory. Emory & Henry’s Kayla Wright stopped four shots.

The Quakers step out of conference Friday to host Johnson & Wales University of Charlotte for a 7 p.m. contest inside Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center.
