Elon Volleyball Not Able to Put Away CofC

ELON, N.C. – Despite three players with double-doubles in the match, the Elon volleyball team was not able to take a win over visiting College of Charleston tonight, Oct. 8, falling 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 20-25, 24-26), in Alumni Gym.

For the Phoenix (3-15, 0-5 CAA), Kam Terry led all players with a career-high 18 kills and another career-high 11 digs. Megan Gravley added another 13 kills and 10 digs, while Ally Karle finished with 10 kills. Sydel Curry recorded 13 digs and a career-high 46 assists to average an impressive 11.5 assists per set.

On defense, Elon out-blocked CofC, 9-8.5, with a team-high six blocks from Karle. Curry, Gravley and Catherine Head each finished with two in the match.

The Cougars (10-8, 2-2 CAA) saw 15 kills off 18 attempts and no errors from Rachel Devon who hit .833 in two sets played. Melissa Morello claimed a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs.

How it happened: After a kill by Terry got the Phoenix on the board in the opening set, the Cougars used a 9-1 run to take an 18-11 advantage. CofC maintained its lead and moved on to take the win, 25-17.

Kills by Scott, Terry, Gravley and Karle helped the maroon and gold to a 7-5 lead in the second set. The Phoenix used kills by Gravley and Sydney Busa, blocks by Karle and Gravley and an ace by Maddie Jaudon to take a four-point edge, 17-13, forcing CofC to call its second timeout. With Elon leading 18-15, the Cougars managed to score five straight to move in front, 20-18. A Terry kill sparked a Phoenix rally to close out the set on a 7-1 run as a kill by Busa sealed the 25-21 win to tie the match at one set each.

The Cougars moved out to an early 12-4 lead after the break. A kill by Head helped close the gap to five, 21-16, but CofC would move back in front with a 25-20 third-set victory.

Trailing the Cougars 13-11 in the fourth set, kills by Terry, Gravley and Ebony Scott helped the maroon and gold even the score at 15-all. Several Cougar miscues and another Gravley kill gave Elon a 19-17 advantage. CofC answered with a 7-2 run to reach set point, 24-21. Two kills from Terry helped the Phoenix to three straight to make it 24-all and keep the set alive. However, the Cougars claimed the final two points for a 26-24 final and the match win.

Notes: The match marked the 12th time this season Elon has out-blocked its opponent…It was the fourth double-double of the season for both Curry and Gravley, while marking the first of Terry’s career.
