Fourth Quarter Rally Comes Up Just Short Against LaGrange

LAGRANGE, GA-Greensboro College’s fourth quarter rally came up just short as the Pride football team fell to the Panthers of LaGrange College, 27-25, on Saturday afternoon in USA South Athletic Conference action.

The Panthers kept the Pride off the board in the first half to take a 13-0 lead into the intermission.

However, Greensboro was able to cut the deficit to 13-7 following their first drive of the third quarter., On the drive that started on their own 29 yard line, Greensboro capped off a nine play 71 yard drive that took just over four minutes off the third quarter clock. Mac Graham connected with his tall wide receiver, Armani Williams, from fourteen yards out to find the end zone before Ryan Campbell added the point after attempt.

Later in the quarter, LaGrange was able to add to their lead with another touchdown to make the score 20-7.

Greensboro did not go away as Carlton Williams recovered a Panthers muffed punt to give Greensboro the ball on the LaGrange 20 yard line. Four plays later, Kenneth Purvis rushed the ball up the middle for a two yard touchdown run. The Pride was unable to convert the point after but pulled within seven points at 20-13.

LaGrange then responded back with a long drive of their own to push the Greensboro deficit back to fourteen at 27-13.

The Pride then answered right back with a seven play 75 yard drive that resulted in Purvis’s second rushing touchdown of the day. Following a Graham completion to Raymond Bridges, Purvis accounted from the next 37 yards that included a 26 yard touchdown scamper to pull the Pride to within 27-19.

Greensboro then got one more score on the day with a ten yard touchdown run to make the score 27-25 with just over seven minutes to play. Following the touchdown, Graham’s two point conversion pass came up just short.

On the ensuing possession for LaGrange, the Pride defense came up big to forcing the Panthers to punt the ball away..

Greensboro took over on their own twenty yard line but the last minute drive came up short as the Pride fell 27-25.

“Our guys played extremely hard for a full four quarters today,” Head Coach Bill Young stated following the game. “We have got to limit the self-inflicted mistakes but we will keep grinding away. We will break down the film and turn the page to next week against Averett.”

Graham finished the day with 236 yards through the air and two touchdowns. Kenneth Purvis finished the afternoon with two touchdowns and 91 yards rushing while Cortez Vernon contributed 85 yards on the ground.

Herbert Bridges and Micah McMaster combined to lead the team in tackles with 16 and three pass breakups. Tyrone Barber also had a strong day on the defensive side of the ball. Barber recorded seven total tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble.

Pride Men Roll Past LaGrange In Conference Play

LAGRANGE, GA-The Greensboro College men’s soccer team moved their win streak to three on Saturday afternoon. The Pride defeated the Panthers of LaGrange College, 5-0, in USA South Athletic Conference action.

Carlos Barragan recorded his first goal of the game just four minutes into the game when he was able to beat the LaGrange keeper to the top left corner of the goal. Just two minutes later, Robbie Barnes took a feed from Craig Gage to extend the Greensboro lead to 2-0.

Later in the half, Greensboro was able to get another from Barragan while Shaun Watt scored off another assist from Gage to send the Pride into the halftime period up 4-0.

After the intermission period, it only took Greensboro less than two minutes to score the game’s final goal. Carlos Barragan completed a hat trick with his third goal of the game while Craig Gage recorded his third assist.

Jamie Payamps recorded the win in goal for Greensboro despite only facing one shot on goal. Chandler Pribble also appeared in goal for the Pride.

“The boys started the game fast as they were able to put away several chances early,” stated Head Coach Tony Falvino. “The quick start allowed us to play on the front foot. Now we move on and look forward to Huntingdon tomorrow.”

The Pride (5-4-1. 2-0-1 USA South) will return to action tomorrow afternoon against Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. The game is set to get underway at 3:00 PM. For the latest on Pride men’s soccer, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.

Volleyball Splits USA South Matches On Saturday

STANTON, VA – The Greensboro College volleyball team traveled to Stanton, Virginia for a pair of USA South Athletic Conference matches on Saturday afternoon. The Pride dropped a tight, 3-2, match against Piedmont College to open the day before defeating the host Squirrels of Mary Baldwin, 3-0, to end the day.

In the match against the Lions, Greensboro jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the opening set of the match 25-21.

After Greensboro took the opening set, Piedmont then won the next two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-18. The Pride was then able to force a decisive fifth set by squaring the match up at 2-2 with a 25-23 set four victory.

In the fifth set, Greensboro fell behind early and could not recover falling by a 15-6 score.

Shayla Moss (16) and Evan Sherer (12) combined for 28 kills in the match to lead the way for the Pride. Breanan Baker recorded seven kills while Meredith Summers contributed six kills.

Tori Belcher recorded a team high 30 digs while Darrian Bolt and Haley Bohrer combined for 45 assists.

After falling to the Lions, Greensboro then closed out the day by sweeping Mary Baldwin 3-0. Greensboro won the three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-21.

Marquenette Fuller, Meredith Summers, Brandy Johnson, and Vannesa Marquez each recorded a team high five kills in the match.

“We had a great day of volleyball, showing what we are capable of regardless of the result,” stated Head Coach Kaci Pike. “We need to take the momentum of our win in to the remainder of the conference and finish strong.”
