New SUBWAY® Restaurants “Fit for Life” Online Tool Helps Children Track Healthy Habits

Triad Schools and SUBWAY® Restaurants Work Together to Help Students Live Healthy, Active Lifestyles

GREENSBORO, N.C., – According to a Harvard Public Health School study, kids are eating more fruits and vegetables than in previous years, and SUBWAY® restaurants are encouraging this trend by helping kids keep track of their healthy habits with the “Fit for Life” Challenge.

During October, local SUBWAY® restaurants are providing schools with a mobile-friendly online tracking tool to help students log their healthy eating and physical activity choices for any two-week period.

Jefferson Elementary School in Greensboro was the first school in the area to sign up to participate in the challenge, which is aimed at elementary and middle school-aged children. Elite runner and 2012 silver medalist Manteo Mitchell of Asheville, N.C., visited the school on Oct. 14 and spoke with students about how staying on a healthy course while in school – getting enough rest, eating good foods, drinking water and being physically active – can help them achieve their dreams.

“We are excited to work with schools across the Triad who will encourage students to track their healthy eating and physical activity online,’” said Andy Strand, local owner of SUBWAY® restaurants in Greensboro. “By encouraging students to think about their daily habits, they will make healthier choices now and in the future.”

SUBWAY® restaurants joined with USA Track & Field (USATF) for this year’s Fit for Life Challenge. As USATF’s signature community outreach program, RUNJUMPTHROW is a high-energy, interactive half-day of activity that gets students excited about being physically active, incorporating the basic skills of track and field along with music, dancing and instruction. Registered schools holding their own RUNJUMPTHROW event during the SUBWAY® Fit for Life challenge will be eligible to win a RUNJUMPTHROW equipment kit, valued at $1,000.

USA Track & Field is the National Governing Body for track & field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States. USATF fields the national track & field team and encompasses the country’s #1 high school and junior high participatory sport and 30 million adult runners.
