HPU Vollyball Earns Hard-Fought Win At Campbell

• Sophomore Haley Barnes recorded her 13th double-double of the year with 11 kills and 19 digs.
• Freshman Molly Livingston had a stellar night in the middle contributing 10 kills and six total blocks.
• High Point has won 12 of its last 13 matches – the best stretch in head coach Jason Oliver’s tenure.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Despite falling behind early in every set, the High Point University volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. on Friday night.

The Panthers (17-7, 7-1) equaled the program’s best start in Big South play behind a gutsy 11-kill, 19-dig performance from sophomore Haley Barnes. The Camels (9-13, 3-5) battled hard, but couldn’t maintain their solid starts to each set.

“I’m proud of the way our team stepped up and made big plays at crucial times in the match,” head coach Jason Oliver said. “I thought we showed a lot of maturity to beat a Campbell team that plays really well at home and pull out a win.”

Freshman Molly Livingston had another well-rounded evening posting 10 kills and six total blocks to go with a .409 attack percentage. Meanwhile, freshman Abby Broadstreet racked up 11 kills on the night.

Senior Annemarie Chin registered a match-best 25 digs as the Panthers earned a 90-84 edge in kills while holding Campbell to a .124 hitting percentage. Likewise, sophomore Camryn Freiberg continued her solid play with nine kills and three total blocks.

HPU posted a 54-51 margin in kills while hitting at a .222 clip to go with 11 team blocks.

The competitive tone of the match was set early as both teams fought hard as Campbell took an 8-6 lead – the first multiple-point lead of the night. Four kills from Livingston helped turn the tide as the Panthers scored 13 of the next 17 points to build a 19-12 advantage. From there, the Purple & White coasted to a 25-18 behind an efficient attack that tallied just two attack errors while racking up 15 kills.

Freiberg opened the second set with a thunderous kill to keep the pressure on the Camels. Campbell was able to tie the score at 3-3, but once again HPU answered with a run to build a 9-3 edge. However, the home team mounted an extended 19-7 run to take the frame 22-16. The Panthers, then, bounced right back to pull within one (22-21) before Campbell held on for a 25-23 win.

For the third straight set, the Camels took an early lead (6-5) only to see the Panthers go on a prolonged run to take control (17-10). For the remainder of the frame, Campbell could get no closer than five as HPU earned a 25-19.

Like clockwork, an early Campbell lead (3-1) quickly turned into a High Point advantage (10-7). However, neither team was able to pull away as they found themselves tied 14-all midway through the frame. The Panthers finally gained some breathing room scoring seven straight to take a 24-18 edge.

The Panthers continue their 6-match road trip at UNC Asheville on Friday at 7:00 p.m. before taking on Gardner-Webb at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
