NORMAN, Okla. — Guilford College’s men’s golf team remained in 12th place in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches’ Poll released Friday. The rankings were made by members of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and included tournaments through October 16.
Methodist University retained the top spot after receiving 11-of-15 first-place votes. Berry College jumped from ninth place to second place and also received four first-place votes. Oglethorpe University, Wittenberg University, and St. Thomas University (Minn.) round out the top five. St. Thomas earned one top-five nomination.
The Quakers are coming off their final fall tournament at last week’s O’Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament. Guilford shot 311-302-613 and finished third of 18 teams, one stroke out of second place. Freshman Justin Perdue led the team with 74-77-151, third in a 96-man field. Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) was one stroke back tied for fifth place (78-74-152). Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) made a tournament-best 26 pars and finished seventh at 75-78-153.
Palmer, a 2015 Third Team All-American, owns the team’s lowest scoring average (73.15) in 13 rounds. Perdue holds Guilford’s second-lowest scoring average (73.25) in eight rounds. Gross (75.62) has a slim edge over Harrison Frye (76.13) for third place among the team’s scoring leaders. Guilford finished the fall season with 298.15 team stroke average.
Head coach Justin Tereshko’s squad is also ranked 18th in the latest Golfstat.com Division III Relative Rankings. Guilford will return to action March 7-8, 2016, at the TaylorMade/Adidas Intercollegiate in Dataw Island, South Carolina.
