NCHSAA Performance of Week

STUDENTS FROM NORTH DAVIDSON, HENDERSONVILLE EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL — Samantha DeBusk of North Davidson High School and Michael Schmidt of Hendersonville High School have been named winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel with Jersey Mike’s Subs®.

Each week one male and one female athlete in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

DeBusk, a junior on North Davidson’s women’s golf team, shot an 85 last week in the NCHSAA 4-A Western Regional tournament at Brushy Mountain in Taylorsville to qualify for the state championship event. What makes this particularly noteworthy is that Samantha accomplished this playing in severe pain due to cracked ribs.

She was injured in a car accident during the last week of the regular season but refused to miss any matches. She helped her team maintain its hold on second place in the Central Piedmont Conference and earned all-conference honors for the third year in a row. Coach Jeffrey Long says that Samantha “is probably the most dedicated golfer that I have had the pleasure of coaching.”

Schmidt had a tremendous game for Hendersonville as he led the Bearcats to a wild 56-42 football victory over Black Mountain Charles D. Owen in a regionally televised contest.

The 6-3, 188-pound senior quarterback carried the football 16 times for 163 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of two and 33 yards. Through the air he connected on 15 of 22 passes for 303 yards and three more touchdowns, the TD tosses covering 10, 23 and 85 yards, to give him a whopping 466 yards in total offense.

TWC Sports Channel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
