FREEDMAN, ISAACSON(Ragsdale HS) LEAD INDIVIDUAL 4-A GOLF; CARDINAL GIBBONS ATOP TEAM STANDINGS

PINEHURST – Two golfers are tied for first place in the individual standings after Monday’s opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.

Cardinal Gibbons, in its first year at the 4-A level is on top, eight shots ahead of Pinecrest, with Greensboro Page in third and Raleigh Wakefield fourth.

PINEHURST – Two golfers are tied for first place in the individual standings after Monday’s opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.

Hailey Freedman of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons and Madison Isaacson of Jamestown Ragsdale each came in at three-over par 75 to lead the tournament by two shots.

Michelle Harn of Charlotte Catholic is third at 77, with Raleigh Athens Drive’s Jennifer Change, Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs and Caroline Cahill of Wilmington Laney knotted at 78.

Chang is the defending champion and an Athens Drive golfer has taken the title each of the last three years.

Par is set at 72 and the layout is 5,580 yards.

Cardinal Gibbons, in its first year at the 4-A level, leads the team standings with a 240, eight shots ahead of Pinecrest. Greensboro Page is third and Raleigh Wakefield fourth.

The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of nine teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 13th year that the sport has been classified. It is the fifth time that three separate championships have been held and the 35th year for state championship competition in the sport.

The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.

CHAPEL HILL’S KIM SHOOTS 68, HAS INDIVIDUAL LEAD AFTER FIRST DAY IN NCHSAA 3-A WOMEN’S GOLF

FOXFIRE VILLAGE— Gina Kim of Chapel Hill shot a blistering four-under par 68 on Monday to take a four-shot lead over the field after the opening round in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 3-A women’s golf championships at the Red Fox Course at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.

Kim’s four-under score featured five birdies, four on the front nine, and gives her a four-stroke advantage over Siranon Shomee of Lee Senior, the two-time defending champion, and Callista Rice of North Buncombe, both at even par 72.

Hickory’s Anna McDonald is in fourth at 73, five shots back. The championship layout is a par 72 and 5,703 yards.

Fayetteville Terry Sanford leads the team standings by five shots, recording a 249 to 254 for Rockingham County after one day of play. Union Pines is third and Lee County fourth. Ledford, which captured three state 3-A championships in a row from 2011 through ’13, is in fifth.

STUART CRAMER’S PORMAN HAS INDIVIDUAL LEAD, TIE FOR TOP IN TEAM COMPETITION IN 1-A/2-A WOMEN’S GOLF

SOUTHERN PINES—Ellie Porman of Belmont’s Stuart Cramer High has the individual lead by four shots after the opening day of play Monday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1-A/2-A women’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.

Porman had a four-over par total of 76, with two birdies, 11 pars, four bogeys and a double bogey.

A Salisbury golfer has won the individual title three of the last four years, with Grace Yatawara back in the field as the defending champion, and Yatawara is in a tie for second. She is knotted with Sarah Hardin of Ashe County and Caroline Cole of Gastonia Highland Tech, all of whom recorded scores of nine-over 81 in the first round.

Caitlyn Seastrunk of East Wake Academy fired a hole-in-one on the par-three sixth hole on Monday, acing the 138-yard hole. But she recorded a 97 and is well back of the leaders.

The course is set at par 72 and 5,659 yards for the championship

Salisbury, seeking its fifth straight state team title, has some work to do since it is 14 strokes off the lead. West Davidson and Misenheimer Gray Stone Day are deadlocked for the team lead at 267 and lead Newport Croatan by five shots.
