College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, Salem 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Kelsey Ruehling amassed her seventh double-double of the season as Guilford College claimed a Friday evening victory over Salem College, 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 26-24, 25-19), in the Quakers’ final contest of the 2015 season.

After a dominant first set where the Quakers (7-17) hit .292 for the set, Guilford continued their momentum with a five-point rally to start the second set. After the Quakers kept the lead at four, the Spirits (3-15) produced a six-point rally to claim the lead and held the advantage for the rest of the set.

Salem rallied after Guilford’s three-point opening rally to start the third set to take a five-point lead, 23-18. Guilford held off the Spirits at set point to win the set thanks to a six-point rally at the end to claim the advantage. Guilford rolled in the fourth set, holding the Spirits to a .000 hitting percentage to close out the victory.

Guilford hit .100 for the match while the Spirits hit .061. Guilford took advantage of ten total service aces and blocked seven balls at the net. Salem held the edge in digs, 84-60.

Ruehling finished her career with Guilford totaling 15 kills and 10 digs for her seventh double-double in 2015, hitting .146 for the match. The senior also tallied six service aces. Marinda Popp produced 10 kills, hitting .125 on the evening. Casey Davis tallied 30 assists and 13 digs while amassing five blocks and seven kills as the team’s starting setter.

Salem’s Kylie Taffer led the Spirits with 13 kills, hitting .250 for match, while adding nine digs. Mariah Sharon tallied seven kills and amassed 28 digs.
