PANTHER CREEK PAIR CLOSER TO 4TH STRAIGHT DOUBLES STATE TITLE

RALEIGH – Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland of Cary Panther Creek took a couple of steps toward a fourth consecutive doubles championship in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s tennis championships on Friday at the Millbrook Exchange Park.

The Panther Creek pair won both of their Friday matches in straight sets to set up a Saturday morning semifinal against Caroline Igo and Summer Jacobs of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons. The only time that feat of four straight titles was accomplished in doubles was by Lisa and Margit Monaco of Fayetteville Terry Sanford in 1977-80, when the tournament was an open event.

Wake County is having a strong showing in the 4-A championships, as all four of the doubles teams in the semifinals are from schools located in Wake County and two of the four singles semifinalists.

Suzanne Boyden of Raleigh Wakefield, who had a bye in the opening round, won easily in her only Friday match and will play in a Saturday morning semifinal against Lauren Gish of Lake Norman. Myers Park’s Maddie Weber faces Panther Creek’s Amanda Cyr in the other singles semifinal.
