Men’s Soccer Sails Into USA South Semi-Finals

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s soccer team won its first-round game Saturday in the USA South Conference men’s soccer tournament, defeating Huntington College 5-1 at Pride Field.

The Pride (13-4-1) took the early advantage at 10:46 in the first half with a goal by Mike Tzablas off the corner kick from Carlos Barragan. The Pride increased its lead with two more quick goals from Shaun Watt at 15:17 and 17:32, going into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, Watt tacked on a third goal for the hat trick, extending the Pride’s lead to 4-0. The Hawks’ Zach Dedman scored his team’s lone goal off a corner kick from Brendon Van.

Watt continued his stellar day with another goal, his fourth of the game and fifth for Greensboro College, to round out the scoring.

The Pride advances to the semifinals, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 6. With today’s win against the Hawks, Greensboro College has earned the right to host the remainder of the USA South tournament.

“The boys played well today and created a lot of chances,” Pride Head Coach Tony Falvino said. “There is still a lot for us to improve on, and today was another opportunity to get better. We are excited to host the conference tournament next week, and our focus moves on to Friday’s game and preparing for it.”

The Pride earned the top seed in the tournament by winning the regular-season championship.

Women’s Soccer Falls In USA South Quarter-Finals

MARYVILLE, TN – The Greensboro College team fell 6-0 to Maryville College Saturday in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

Lauren Greeson and Keegan Bickel each recorded one shot. Brittany Morrison took the loss in goal.

“This was not how we predicted for our season to end but it’s better than the conference predicted for us,” Head Coach Gus Mota said. “We made a lot of positive strides this season to move forward on. I am extremely proud of the girls and look forward to next season.”

Volleyball Drops Pair To Close Out 2015 Season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Greensboro College volleyball team closed out its 2015 season Saturday with two losses in a USA South Athletic Conference quad-match.

The Pride fell to LaGrange College 3-1 before dropping a 3-0 decision to Huntingdon.

Greensboro fell to the Panthers by scores of 21-25, 25-14, 25-13, and 25-14.

Shayla Moss had a team high 10 kills, while Marquenette Fuller and Brandy Johnson recorded seven kills. Tori Belcher had 27 digs.

In the match against the Hawks of Huntingdon, the Pride lost 25-11, 25-23, and 25-18.

Brandy Johnson had a team high 13 kills, while Breana Baker tallied nine kills. Bari Tressler and Katie Clark combined for 22 assists.

“This season has been an opportunity to grow as a unit,” Head Coach Kaci Pike said. “Our last match showed how far we have come, and how much love the girls have for each other. Now it’s time to work and improve in the offseason.”

Football Falls To Huntingdon

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro College Pride fell 40-20 Saturday in football to USA South Conference foe Huntingdon College at Jamieson Stadium.

The Pride won the toss and elected to defer. The Hawks (7-1, 5-0 USA South) returned the opening kickoff 22 yards to their own 41-yard line, eventually scoring first on a 5-yard touchdown run by John Iwaniec.

The Hawks tacked on a safety with 3:36 in the first quarter before driving downfield for their second touchdown to increase the lead to 16-0.

With 13:51 remaining in the second quarter, the Pride completed a six-play, 73-yard drive for their first touchdown of the game. After a failed 2-point conversion, the Pride trailed 16-6.

After a couple of failed drives between both teams, the teams scored in a flurry to close the half.

Huntingdon quarterback Luke Bailey found Darius Dawsey in the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown pass to increase the Hawks’ lead to 23-6 with 6:47 remaining in the first half.

On Greensboro’s next drive, Cortez Vernon broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score 23-12.

With 2:20 left in the half, the Pride recovered a Huntingdon fumble on the Hawks’ 13-yard line. After a 5-yard run by Vernon and a 15-yard personal-foul penalty, Greensboro faced third down and goal from the 16. Quarterback Mac Graham found Raymond Bridges for a touchdown pass, followed by a successful two-point rush attempt from Vernon to make the score 23-20 with 1:16 left in the half.

However, the Hawks again struck quickly with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Nick Haas, making the score 30-20 after the successful PAT to close the half.

Huntingdon’s Vic Jerald rushed for a 1-yard touchdown with 8:45 remaining in the third quarter. The PAT made it 37-20 in favor of the Hawks. Chase Young tacked on a 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the final score.

The Pride fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The Pride faces Methodist University at 1 p.m. Nov. 7 in its final home game of the season.
