Elon Volleyball Phoenix Closes Out Road Matches at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball team was not able to claim a win in its final road match of the regular season, falling to UNCW, 3-0 (19-25, 18-25, 21-25), tonight, Nov. 7, in Hanover Hall.

Michelle Klein tallied nine kills off 15 attempts and had only two errors to hit .467 for the Phoenix (6-22, 2-12) and also posted two blocks, two digs and an ace. Ebony Scott also recorded nine kills followed by Kam Terry with five kills. Sydel Curry finished with a match-high 27 assists, while Maddie Jaudon had a team-high 10 digs and Ally Karle posted three blocks.

Anna Moss led all players with 10 kills off 13 attempts and no errors to hit .769 for the Seahawks (20-6, 11-3). Both Kristen Powell and Maddy Kline finished with eight kills, while Meredith Peacock had five blocks.

How it happened: Trailing by just two in the first set, 11-9, UNCW was able to score six straight to move its lead to eight before a kills by Karle and Sydney Busa helped Elon close the gap to five, 17-12. A kill by Klein and a block by Klein and Terry kept the Phoenix within five, 20-15, but the Seahawks pulled away to take the set, 25-19.

Kills by Scott and Klein kept the maroon and gold within three, 14-11, in the second set until the Seahawks managed a 7-0 run for a 10-point advantage. A Klein kill and solo block by Karle made it 21-14 but UNCW finished out the win, 25-18.

In the third set, a block by Karle and Terry and kills by Terry, Kayla Agae and Scott helped the Phoenix to a 5-2 lead. With Elon leading by two, 14-12, the Seahawks responded and moved ahead by four, 18-14. Aces by Erin Kelly and Agae helped the maroon and gold stay within two, 21-19, before UNCW claimed a 25-21 final and the match.

Up next: The Phoenix returns home to Alumni Gym to close out the regular season next weekend, beginning with a match against Hofstra on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m.
