Elon Football’s Groll, Williams Snare Academic All-District Honors

ELON, N.C. – Elon University football players Nick Groll and Miles Williams have both earned spots on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Football Team and will now be eligible for Academic All-American accolades.

This is the first time since 2011 that Elon has had an Academic All-District selection, and the first time with multiple selections since 2006.

Groll, a defensive lineman from Armonk, N.Y., carries a 3.80 GPA as an economics major. Through eight games, the junior has tallied 23 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss and 2.0 sacks. Groll has forced one fumble and blocked a kick this season. In Elon’s victory at Gardner-Webb, Groll tied a career high with seven total tackles. He also posted six stops against 20th-rated New Hampshire. Groll is a three-time Dean’s List recipient and has been named to the President’s List once.

Williams, a defensive back from Roebuck, S.C., boasts a 3.55 GPA as a human service studies major. Williams, a senior on the field, graduated cum laude last spring, but is completing course work for graduate school. He has started all eight games and has posted 46 total tackles. Williams leads the team with two interceptions, has forced one fumble and recovered another. In Elon’s win at Stony Brook, Williams tallied a personal best 12 tackles. He has been named to the Dean’s List three times and the President’s List once. He was a 2014 CAA Academic All-Conference pick as well as a 2012 Southern Conference Academic All-Conference honoree. The two-time team captain was named to the 2013 AFCA All-State Good Works Team.

To be eligible for Academic All-District honors, a player must compete in at least 50 percent of the team’s contest, must have reached at least sophomore athletic eligibility, have completed at least one full calendar year at the institution and carry at least a 3.30 GPA.
