HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University volleyball team fell in three sets to Coastal Carolina in the Millis Center on Saturday.

The Panthers (21-9, 11-3) will be the No. 2 seed in the Big South Tournament, while the Chanticleers (21-4, 14-0) are the No. 1 seed and the defending champions.

“Obviously, this is not the outcome that we wanted but the credit goes to Coastal Carolina and the way it played,” head coach Jason Oliver said. “It was an emotional night for our seniors and I am excited to get back in the gym and work on Monday morning.”

Sophomore Camryn Freiberg paced HPU’s attack with nine digs to go with six digs. On the defensive side, it was senior Annemarie Chin who led the way with 13 digs as sophomore Haley Barnes posted six kills and nine digs.

The Chanticleers earned a 44-23 edge in kills and a 49-47 margin in digs.

The visitors came out hot in the first two sets building identical 8-3 leads. In the first frame, HPU fought back to within four at 19-15 before the Chanticleers earned a 25-17 victory. Meanwhile, in the second set CCU never let the Panthers get any closer than five (8-3) en route to a 25-11 win.

In the third and final frame, the Purple & White took a 1-0 lead before a 6-0 run turned the set in CCU’s favor. However, HPU fought back to make it 6-5 behind kills from Barnes and Freiberg. But the Chanticleers answered with another 6-0 to build a 12-5 lead and went on the close out the match with a 25-13 win.

High Point now turns its attention to the Big South Tournament, which the Panthers will host in the Millis Center beginning with the quarterfinals on Thursday. Bracket and pairing information will be updated on the Tournament Central page.
