Elon Volleyball Phoenix Sweeps Northeastern on Senior Day

ELON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball team closed out the 2015 season in an impressive fashion with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-23, 25-17) sweep over Northeastern today, Nov. 15, in Alumni Gym on Senior Day.

The Phoenix (7-23, 3-13 CAA) defense tallied 12 total blocks with the help of six blocks from both Sydney Busa and Ally Karle followed by five from Catherine Head.

Sydel Curry posted her ninth double-double of the season with a match-high 25 assists and 13 digs. Busa fell just shy of the double with a team-high nine kills and 14 digs, while libero Maddie Jaudon tallied a team-high 17 digs.

The Huskies (6-25, 3-13 CAA) saw a match-high 11 kills from Brigitte Burcescu and 14 assists from Kristen Walding, while Gabrielle Eyl recorded 23 digs.

How it happened:
With the first set even at six-all, the Huskies used a 4-0 run to move in front, 10-6. The Phoenix used kills by Head, Kam Terry, Karle, Busa and a block by Busa and Karle to pull the set even again at 13-all. Northeastern would take a two-point advantage three more times but the maroon and gold fought back to make it 22-all. Each team reached set point twice before the score reached 27-all after a Terry kill. Elon claimed the final two points, including a kill by Kayla Agae, to close out the set and take a 29-27 win.

Off the serve of Head, the Phoenix jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead, including a Head ace and kill by Ebony Scott, to start the second set. NU rallied and with the set even at 11-all, the maroon and gold scored four straight off kills by Busa, Terry and Curry to take a 15-11 edge. Elon maintained its advantage until the Huskies closed the gap to one, 22-21. A kill and ace by Busa put the Phoenix ahead by three, 24-21, as the team closed out the set, 25-23, to take a 2-0 match lead.

Elon used another hot start in the third set to take a 9-2 advantage after kills by Head, Scott and Busa and a block by Busa and Head. The Huskies pulled within two, 11-9, before a 6-3 run capped by an ace by Agae made it a five-point lead, 17-12. A kill by Scott and a block by Busa and Head tallied the final two points for the Phoenix for a 25-17 final and the sweep.

Notes: The win marks the first for Elon against Northeastern…The Huskies lead the all-time series, 4-1…This is the first victory for the Phoenix on Senior Day since 2012.
