RALEIGH, N.C. – The High Point University women’s basketball team fell 89-48 to N.C. State in Broughton High School’s Holliday Gym on Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers (1-1) trailed N.C. State 9-6 six minutes into the game, but an extended run allowed the Wolfpack (2-0) to build a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

“Obviously today was not a pleasurable result, but growing pains are expected,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “I believe that it is good to see opponents of this caliber early. We will work to get better tomorrow and every day after.”

Offensively, sophomore Kat Harris with 12 points led the Purple & White while freshman Lindsey Edwards added 10 points for the second straight game. Junior Kaylah Keys chipped in with six points to move past Erin Reynolds for eighth on HPU’s Division I scoring list. The Southaven, Miss. native has 1,041 points in just two-plus seasons with the Panthers.

On the boards, senior Aariel Allen paced the squad with six rebounds. Defensively, Keys and freshman Emma Bockrath earned three steals apiece as HPU racked up 10 pilfers.
Early on neither team could get it going offensively as N.C. State held a 6-4 edge at the first media timeout (4:59). Later, redshirt-freshman Kennedy Currie hit a turnaround jumper to make it 9-6 before the Wolfpack answered with an extended 21-3 run to build a 30-9 advantage (6:15, 2nd).

The Panthers, then, got a spark from Edwards and posted an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to 15 points (35-20, 2:38). However, N.C. State closed the half with a 9-2 run to take a 44-22 lead into the break.

After halftime, the home team came out and outscored the Panthers 27-7 in the third quarter to take a 71-29 edge into the final period. From there, the Wolfpack cruised to an 89-48 win as HPU won the fourth quarter 19-18.

The Panthers continue their three-game road trip at No. 6 Maryland on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to UNCG on Saturday, Nov. 21.
