College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 67, Greensboro 56

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor) scored a game-high 24 points thanks to a career-best six three-pointers in Guilford College’s 67-56 road victory at Greensboro College Wednesday night. Weatherly made all six three-pointers and had 20 points in the first half of a game in which the Quakers (2-0) never trailed.

Weatherly, a junior forward, made her first four threes in the opening four-and-a-half minutes, which sparked Guilford to a 26-15 first-quarter lead. She knocked down a fifth trifecta in the second half before finally missing. With Weatherly bombing away from the top of the key, Guilford’s Heaven Walters (Elkin, N.C./Starmount) found space along the baseline and scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half. The Quakers made eight-of-13 first-half three-pointers and took advantage of 14 Greensboro (0-1) turnovers to build a 45-29 halftime lead.

Greensboro outscored Guilford, 11-9, in a largely pedestrian third quarter, but came alive in the final stanza. Behind six of Alexis Hite’s (Richmond, Va./Monacan) team-high 13 points, Greensboro reeled off an 11-1 run midway through the final quarter. The Pride made it a 59-53 game with 3:11 remaining on a Hite jumper, but the Quakers’ Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) scored on clutch drives to the basket on consecutive possessions, which restored a nine-point edge with just over two minutes remaining. Greensboro made just one field goal after Hite’s final basket and Guilford’s Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie County (Pfeiffer)) sealed the win with four points in the final minute.

Weatherly added 10 rebounds and three steals to her 24 points for her second double-double in as many games. Walters finished with a career-high 14 points and rookie Ymani Breedlove (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) added 11 points and three boards off the bench.

Greensboro’s Kamerin Williams totaled 10 points and shared team-high rebounding honors (6) with Hite.
Coach Stephanie Flamini’s Quakers host the Guilford College Classic this weekend starting Saturday (11/21) when Lynchburg College meets the Stevens Institute of Technology at noon. Guilford follows with a 2:00 p.m. game against Denison College. Lynchburg plays Denison Sunday at noon, after which the Quakers meet Stevens at 2:00 p.m.
