HIGH POINT, N.C. – The No. 2 seeded High Point University volleyball team was unable to overcome a strong defensive match from the No. 7 seeded Campbell Camels and fell in straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 31-29) at the Millis Center in the Big South Tournament quarterfinals.

“We fought ourselves all night,” head coach Jason Oliver said. “Our three seniors have had great careers and did a lot of good things for this program with their leadership and that showed when we fought back. Credit goes to Campbell for keeping the pressure on us.”

The Panthers held the edge in kills (46-36) and assists (44-35), but fell victim to 44 total errors, including 13 service errors. Campbell outhit High Point .228-.167 and led the match in digs (50-46) and blocks (8.0-4.0).

Sophomore Camryn Freiberg paced the Panthers with 15 kills, including seven in the third set. Fellow sophomore Haley Barnes posted a near double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. Senior Gabi Mirand dished out 40 assists while senior Annemarie Chin posted 19 digs in the three-set defeat.

Campbell took control of the first set thanks to an early 9-4 run. High Point closed to within three late in the set at 22-19, but an extended rally went the Camels way, which buoyed Campbell to a 25-20 victory. CU recorded four blocks in the first set and outhit HPU, .290-.119.

The second set featured eight early ties, the last of which came at 12-12. From there, Campbell rattled off nine of the next 12 points to take control of the set at 21-16. High Point would get no closer, and fell 25-18. The Camels hit a robust .462 in the second set, while the Panthers were held to .273 due to five errors.

The third set provided the most drama. Four early ties gave way to a Campbell run that put the Camels ahead, 19-15. High Point rallied to even the match at 19, only to fall behind once more at 24-22. Facing elimination, the Panthers got a block from Freiberg and freshman Molly Livingston and another on a Campbell error to tie the set 24-24.

CU continued to press, earning multiple match points that HPU was able to counter all the way to a 29-29 tie. From there though, a service error and block from Campbell gave the Camels the win on their eighth match point.

The Panthers finish the season at 21-10, which marks the best record by winning percentage (.677) and the second-most wins under Oliver.
