Southern Storm Surges Past Wilson’s Fike Demons- Wyatt Smith Reporting

Southern Guilford came into Friday night’s second round NCHSAA 3A matchup as the number four seed, facing the visiting Fike Golden Demons from Wilson, N.C., who were the number 12 seed. As many had projected, the Southern Guilford Storm were the much stronger team in the matchup.

Soutern Guilford stormed onto the field Friday night to intro song AC/DC’s “Hells Bells”, and it was a perfect choice, as they rung the Golden Demon’s bell to the likes of a 45-0 victory.

The Storm received the ball in the first quarter, and after only five plays, were forced to punt. Southern star Rayshawn Knight booted the ball perfectly 43 yards down to the Fike one yard line.

The Golden Demons then started a 16-play drive that ate more than six minutes off the clock. The drive was led by the running of talented running back A.J. Hines.

With 5:10 remaining in the first quarter, the Storm took a timeout that seemed to have awakened their defense. After the timeout, the Demons were finally forced to fourth down and attempted their first pass of the drive, which was incomplete.

The Storm took over on downs with 3:21 left in the first quarter and never looked back.

“We just executed on each play,” quarterback Ray Knight said of the victory.

Southern started the scoring with just 47.7 seconds left in the first quarter when quarterback Ray Knight threw to Kenyon Taylor for a 38-yard touchdown.
The score began a series of touchdowns by the Storm, who easily found the end zone on 6 of their 7 possessions in the first half, including 5 of 6 in the 2nd quarter.

Southern led 38-0 at half.

Fike’s quarterback, a James Madison University commit, threw two interceptions and fumbled once for the only Fike turnovers of the evening.
Southern Guilford outplayed and dominated the Golden Demons in all areas of the game.

“Our defense did awesome,” said Ron Hunt, who also had a touchdown reception in the game. “It’s a team thing.”

“We’ve kinda rode our defense all year,” Southern head coach Darryl Brown said. “I thought we had a lot of different guys contribute, and that’s what we need. We know we’re going to have a test going to Eastern Alamance Friday, but we’re going to come in Monday and work hard.”

The Storm’s matchup with Eastern Alamance is the day after Thanksgiving in the third round of the 3A playoffs. They will need an entire team effort, as they had tonight, if they are to leave Mebane victorious.
