GREENSBORo, N.C. – Trevor Mayo scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the second half of Guilford College’s comeback win over Cabrini College in Saturday’s Guilford Men’s Basketball Classic finale. Tournament Most Valuable Player Will Freeman also scored nine down the stretch as the Quakers (3-0) overcame a 12-point second-half deficit.
Isaiah Martin netted 25 points and Tanner Brooks added 24 as St. Mary’s College of Maryland downed Greensboro College, 81-63, in Saturday’s opening game.

Cabrini’s Ace Henry pumped in five three-pointers and had 15 first-half points, which helped the Cavaliers (2-2) to a 45-39 halftime lead. His sixth and final trifecta five and a-half minutes into the second half opened a 58-46 Cabrini advantage, its largest.

The Quakers answered with a 20-6 run over the next 6:44 and took its first lead since the opening minute on a Justen Best three-pointer. Best scored eight of his 14 points in the second half and made four-of-six three-point shots. A.J. Metz made both long-distance shots in the second half, one with 5:55 remaining that gave Guilford the lead for good, 69-68.

Metz’s triple triggered an 11-4 Quakers’ flurry capped by Freeman’s free throws with 1:35 left that opened an 80-72 lead. The Cavaliers rallied to within 83-82 with 14 seconds left, but Guilford’s Jarrod Rogers made two free throws with 12 ticks remaining and Ivan Robinson’s three-pointer at the other end fell off the mark.

The Quakers shot 50 percent (15 of 30) from the floor in the second half and cashed 10 Cabrini turnovers into 20 points. Best’s career-high 14 points helped Guilford’s reserves outscore the Cavaliers’, 39-20. Metz (8 points), Carson Long (9 points, 8 rebounds) and Trever Hyatt (8 points) also provided meaningful minutes off the bench. Guilford’s Zachary Houston joined Freeman on the all-tournament team after collecting six points, a team-high 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals. John Bryant added eight points and four boards.

Brooks scored 15 second-half points, knocked down three three-pointers and had four assists.

Simeon Howard’s 14 points and seven rebounds led Greensboro (0-4). Donovan Griffith added five points, three rebounds and two steals. He represented the Pride on the all-tournament team.
