NCHSAA State 2-A Boy’s Soccer Championship

SALISBURY BLANKS WASHINGTON 3-0 IN NCHSAA 2-A MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

RALEIGH – Senior midfielder Landon Goodman was the Most Valuable Player as he helped lead Salisbury to a convincing 3-0 victory over Washington in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s soccer championship at Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State University on Saturday afternoon.

Goodman scored the second goal of the game in the 55th minute off an assist from Kevin Flores, his 66th tally of the season, and then the Hornets iced it eight minutes later when freshman Brandon Ibanez lofted in a goal to make it 3-0.

Goodman’s single season total of 66 goals is tied for third place all-time in the NCHSAA Record Book.

Salisbury had taken a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when senior Chris Uribe scored off a set piece, assisted by Joshua Lynch.

Senior goalkeeper Arturo Ramirez recorded the shutout in goal and was credited with four saves. The Hornets had 13 shots on goal to four for the Pam Pack and had six corner kick opportunities to four for Washington.

Salisbury was making its third appearance in the NCHSAA state men’s soccer final and second visit in the last three years, with previous state titles in 2013 and ’11. The Hornets finished the season 27-0-2 and ended the year with a 25-match win streak.

Washington, in the finals for the first time, ended the year 26-2 and had its 18-match winning streak snapped in the championship.

The Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance and the city of Raleigh served as primary host city sponsors for this championship, and Time Warner Cable SportsChannel was the presenting sponsor.
