WEDDINGTON BLANKS LEE COUNTY 2-0 IN NCHSAA 3-A MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

RALEIGH — Weddington made two second-half goals stand up for a 2-0 victory over Lee County for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s soccer championship at Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State University on Saturday night.

Lee County may have had the better of play in the first half, but the teams battled to a scoreless tie after 40 minutes. Then Weddington scored early in the second half when Mitchell Van Dyne ran on to a through ball from Michael Davidson, timed it perfectly, sand scored just inside the far post for a 1-0 Warrior lead in the 45th minute.

Van Dyne, a senior forward who was a scoring threat throughout the night, was named the championship Most Valuable Player.

The Warriors opened up a 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute when Jay Peeler played the ball deep to senior forward Mason Peeler in the box. Peeler then settled it, spun and fired a left-footed shot good for the goal.

Weddington had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, and the Warriors held a slight 5-4 edge in penalty kicks.

Weddington keepers Ben Fletcher and Lucas Gusmao split time in the shutout, with Fletcher credited for a save in the first half and Gusmao getting two saves in the second half.

Lee County closed out its season at 25-4-1 and had a 14-match winning streak snapped, while Weddington wound up 20-1-2 and ended the season with a 10-match winning streak.

Both schools were making their initial appearances in the NCHSAA men’s soccer state championship match.

The Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance and the city of Raleigh served as primary host city sponsors for this championship, and Time Warner Cable SportsChannel was the presenting sponsor.
