College Men’s Basketball Final – Averett 74, Guilford 62

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Charles Bryant’s game-high 19 points led visiting Averett University to a 74-62 basketball win at Guilford College Tuesday night.

Bryant had 11 points on five-for-five shooting in the first half, which helped Averett (3-1) to a 39-32 halftime lead. The Cougars outscored Guilford, 11-4, in the first six and a half minutes of the second half and built a 19-point lead before the Quakers (3-1) rallied.

Guilford’s Trevor Mayo scored 10 of his 11 points in the second half and helped spark the comeback. His free throw with 4:31 remaining capped a 17-8 Quakers’ run that drew the hosts to within 61-54 with 4:31 remaining.

A Will Freeman layup with 1:46 remaining made it a 67-62 game and got the Quakers back into the contest. Guilford forced a missed shot at the other end of the floor, but Averett’s Trevor West came up with the offensive rebound and the Quakers were forced to start fouling.
