Jamestown, NC – –

After losing their opener on the road, the Western Guilford Hornets had reeled off two consecutive impressive wins. The Ragsdale Tigers were heading into tonight’s matchup with two consecutive wins of their own, both to start their season. Someone’s streak would come to an end tonight as both teams would look to make a mark early to gain the upper hand.

The opening period was close, with neither gaining more than a one possession advantage. The second quarter saw Ragsdale take an eight point lead, however in the final minute of the half the Tigers would squander the ball away several times, but would still hold on to a slim four point halftime lead. In the third period, Ragsdale’s defense would stiffen and hold Western to only 8 points, while the Tigers would go on a 12-2 run to gain an advantage that would certainly come in handy. As well as the Tigers played in the 3rd quarter, the Hornets were just as good in the final frame. Trailing by 16 points entering the 4th, the Hornets would go on 14-0 run to cut their deficit to only two points. The final few minutes of the game were back and forth. With the game tied at 49, Kyle Watkins hit two key free throws for the Tigers to go up 51-49. Western’s next possession was a running lay-in to tie the game at 51 a piece. After both teams traded baskets yet again, Ragsdale’s Shawn Stringfellow was then fouled with 1.5 seconds remaining. He would calmly knock down both free throws to give the Tigers the two point advantage. Western’s full court pass was first deflected out of bounds to put only 0.9 seconds remaining. This time they completed the pass, and got a decent look near half court but it would not fall. Ragsdale prevailed in thrilling fashion by the final score of 55-53.
