Newberry Breaks the SAC 3-Point Record in 122-69 Win over Allen University*****James Stepp (Ragsdale High), was very impressive going 6-8 from the three, scoring 20 points and adding four assists without a turnover in just 17 minutes.*****

Newberry men’s basketball broke out of a shooting slump in a large way Tuesday night against an Allen University team that had SC State beat last week before faltering late, and who played the South Carolina Gamecocks tough in an exhibition. The Wolves had 30 assists, made 22 three point shots (a South Atlantic Conference Record), forced 31 turnovers and collected 15 offensive rebounds on their way to a 122-69 win. The score was tied at 20, five minutes into the game as both teams came out firing. Allen cooled off and Newberry stayed hot for the entire game going 22-45 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Mason Spease (Concord, NC), was the player of the game shooting 8-10 from 3, scoring 26 points, grabbing six rebounds and adding four steals a pair of assists in just 19 minutes of playing time.

Fellow sophomore James Stepp (Ragsdale High), was also impressive going 6-8 from the three, scoring 20 points and adding four assists without a turnover in just 17 minutes.

A third sophomore, DJ Copeland led us with 8 rebounds to go with 8 points and two steals. Seniors Brandon Taylor (Coshocton, OH) had 7 rebounds to go with 8 points, Ronell Crockett (Anderson, SC) was 4-4 from the field, Mitch Riggs (Victoria, Australia) had 10 points and 3 assists, Xavier Holmes (Great Falls, SC) added 11 points and James Ashby (Auckland, New Zealand) was darn near perfect missing just one shot, scoring 8, and adding 3 assists and 3 steals in just 11 minutes. Junior point guard Matt Spears (Charlotte, NC) had five assists and only one turnover and fellow junior guard Dhonte Ford (Oxen Hill, MD) had six defensive rebounds. Freshman Amp Moore (Mt. Pleasant, SC) had nine points, 3 steals and two assists in only 8 minutes. 15 players got meaningful minutes and it was truly a team win.

Our pressure defense has forced 31, 28 and 27 turnovers in the last three games and our guys fought through a stretch where great shots were not falling. Against Allen it seemed like all shots were falling.

The Wolves are on the road this weekend as they face Carson Newman (Jefferson City, TN) at 4:00pm.
