Coach Freddy Johnson (Greensboro Day)

Coach Freddy Johnson is making his first trip to the Chick-fil-A Classic. Coach Johnson is the all-time leader in wins among N.C. high school coaches. He began this season with 930 wins. Last year’s team finished at 33 wins and 3 losses. His team was one of eight selected to participate in the Dick’s Sporting Goods National Invitation.

During his 38 seasons, Johnson’s teams have won 22 conference titles, appeared in 16 state championship games and won eight state titles including this past year.

This year’s team features three Division I-caliber players in JP Moorman (class of 2017), John Newman (Class of 2018) and Will Dillard (Class of 2018).

He has coached more than 47 players who went on to compete at the collegiate level including standout players as Justin Gainey (NC State) and Thomas Roberts (William & Mary), Johnny Thomas (NC State) and Konrad Wysocki (Princeton, 2008 Olympics: Germany), Ross Perkins (Duke) and Jay Lewis (NC State).

Coach Johnson has been inducted into several Hall of Fames including Greensboro College Athletics Hall of Fame (2009) and Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame (2011).

Coach Johnson transcends basketball; he teaches not only the game but also life skills. His success in building young men’s lives for some four decades is a major building block in the Greensboro Day School basketball foundation.

In a recent email, a former player said, “The impact that you (Freddy Johnson) have had on my life and many other young men looms large. I wanted to let you know that your influence affected the direction of my life– in a very positive fashion. I think what I value most about our time together was that I was able to apply the principles that I learned from you in life itself, outside of athletics. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the hard work and teamwork you instilled in me would be something I would be able to use later in many life situations.”
