College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 58, Methodist 52

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) tallied her fifth double-double of the season as Guilford College collected a Sunday afternoon victory over Methodist University, 58-52.

Both sides struggled in the first quarter with neither advantage being higher than four points. Both teams fought through a 3:16 stretch in the first quarter where neither side scored while the Quakers closed the final 4:45 of the period without points. Guilford started the second quarter quickly ending the drought with five straight points, setting the foundation for a 14-4 run that built an eight-point lead. Methodist chipped away at the lead over the final 3:34 of the period as the Quakers entered halftime with a five-point advantage.

The Quakers exploded in the third quarter to build a lead as large as 13 points on the power of a 13-5 run. Guilford’s largest lead in the period came with 5:31 left in the period as five straight Guilford points forced a Methodist timeout. Methodist closed out the period closing the Guilford advantage to as low as six in the remaining stages of the quarter. Guilford brought the lead back to double-digits, achieving the largest lead of the contest 1:04 into the quarter with a 14-point lead. Methodist closed the lead to five with 3:57 left, but the Monarchs could not move any further.

Weatherly totaled 19 points and 16 rebounds on the power of six offensive rebounds. Weatherly added four assists and three steals. Essence Abraham (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) came off the bench to score 13 points and added three steals. Ymani Breedlove added nine rebounds with five grabs on the offensive glass.

Ayanna Peques led the Monarchs with 12 points and four rebounds on five-of-six shooting. Alexia Hines was the remaining Monarch in double figure scoring with ten points.

The Quakers shot 33.3 percent in both halves while the Monarchs shot 35.2 percent on the power of 39.3 percent second-half shooting. The Quakers shot 12-of-18 from the foul line compared to Methodist’s 13-of-19 from the charity stipe. Methodist committed 23 turnovers that were converted into nine Guilford points. The Quakers committed 22 miscues that Methodist turned into 11 points.

Guilford held the advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Monarchs, 43-41, thanks to 17 total offensive rebounds. The held the advantage inside offensively, holding a 30-22 advantage in points in the paint.

The Quakers (7-1, 1-0 ODAC) return from a break after the Christmas holiday Wednesday, December 30th, traveling to Shenandoah University for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
