2015 Fall Season Wells Fargo Cup Leaders Announced

Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings for fall sports in the Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Wells Fargo Cup is sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA. The award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Cup program is in its 37th year.

Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons, which won the Cup at the 3-A level before moving up in classification, is atop the standings among the 4-A schools, while Weddington paces the 3-A class. Carrboro, which has won the Cup for the last four years, leads the way in 2-A and Community School of Davidson is in first place among the 1-A schools.

Gibbons, which captured the state 4-A crowns in volleyball, women’s cross country and women’s golf while garnering playoff points in six sports, tallied 270 points to build a substantial lead. Cary Green Hope, which has won or shared each of the last six state Cups, is in second with 152.5 points, which includes a second-place finish in women’s cross country, a top four placement in women’s tennis and fourth place in men’s cross country.

Charlotte Myers Park and Greensboro Page are tied for third with 142.5 points, with Myers Park finishing second in women’s tennis and Page the runner-up in 4-AA football. Raleigh Broughton is in fifth with 125 points.

Weddington’s fall total of 235 points, which represents playoff points in five sports, included state championships in both men’s soccer and men’s cross country and a trip to the final four in women’s tennis. Second-place Fayetteville Terry Sanford is at 160 points, which also included a visit to the final four in women’s tennis and a tie for second among 3-A schools in women’s golf.

Chapel Hill, with a state championship in women’s cross country and second place finish in men’s cross country, tallied 152.5 points, good for third place. Waxhaw Marvin Ridge (150) is fourth and Lee County (145) is in fifth.

In 2-A, perennial power Carrboro rolled up 195 points in the fall, with its fall performances including a second place in women’s cross country, third in men’s cross country, and state semifinal appearances in volleyball and women’s tennis. That put the Jaguars ahead of second-place Salisbury at 157.5.

Salisbury won the men’s soccer championship, was in the state semifinals in women’s tennis and was fourth among 2-A schools in women’s golf.

Lake Norman Charter is in third at 155, followed by the North Carolina School of Science and Math at 150 and Hendersonville with 142.5 points.

In the 1-A classification, Community School of Davidson leads the way with 215 points on the strength of state playoff points in five sports, with its best finishes a third-place slot in women’s cross country and getting to the state semifinals in football. Misenheimer Gray Stone Day, which won the women’s cross country state title as well as taking the top spot among 1-A schools in women’s golf, tallied 155 points to put it in second.

Raleigh Charter is in third with 135 points, with Kernersville Bishop McGuinness in fourth at 125 after taking the 1-A state title in women’s tennis. Walkertown is fifth at 122.5 points, buoyed by winning the state championship in men’s cross country.

Wells Fargo Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wells Fargo Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wells Fargo Cup points.

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.

Wells Fargo Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall, again after the winter sports, and then concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
