The Sheetz Holiday Classic Championship matchup pitted the Cowboys of Southwest against the Greyhounds of North Surry.

The Cowboys are rolling along, having won the first two rounds by a combined 101 points, while the Greyhounds have showed great fight and grit with come from behind victories in both of their tournament games. The Cowboys look to remain perfect on the year here at the midpoint of the season, while the Greyhounds look to beat a second team from the Piedmont Triad Conference.

The action started quickly with a Cowboy jumper right off the tip. A defensive stop and another basket had it 4-0 in favor of the Cowboys. The Greyhounds slowed the bleeding with a basket, but another 4-0 spurt put the tally at 8-2. The Greyhounds refused to lay down as they got into a little rhythm cutting it to 10-8 with just under 5 minutes to play. That was as close as they would get it for the rest of the night. Southwest wore down the Greyhounds getting the score up to 24-14 with a minute to play. North Surry managed another basket, but a 3 pointer to close out the frame made it 27-16 at the end of one.

The second quarter opened with a 5-0 run by North Surry which made it 27-21. The momentum once again slowly changed tides as the Cowboys methodically forced turnovers and frustrated North Surry as the lead stayed into double figures and eventually landed at 51-33 going in to the break, thanks in large part to Cooper Cunninham’s 4 first half 3 pointers.

The third quarter was when Southwest really put the pedal to the metal as the lead got close to 30 points, but a quick 5-0 spurt by the Greyhounds slowed it. But only momentarily. The Cowboys closed the third frame with a defensive driven 10-0 run making it 80-43.

The Cowboy bench continued their hard work from the third into the fourth as they closed out the game well for the Cowboys as they cruised to a 98-62 Championship Victory, winning their 4th consecutive Sheetz Holiday Classic Tournament.

North Surry was led by Kendal Tucker with 16. Southwest was paced by Cooper Cunningham (17 points, 2 Rebs, Ast), Keyshaun Langley (16 points, 7 Asts, 3 Stls, 3 Rebs), Kobe Langley (16 points, 4 Asts, 3 Rebs), Kaymon Mitchell (12, 7 Rebs, 3 Asts, Stl) and Tournament MVP Kameron Langley with (10 points, 9 Asts, 6 Rebs, 3 Stls). Each Cowboy got on the scoreboard tonight for a great overall team win to move to 13-0 on the 2015-2016 campaign.

  1. Looks like Cowboys have a really good team this year again. Coach Shavers does a tremendous over there. Too bad the admin over there wont let there teams play private schools . I think them playing Wesleyan, HPCA and Gboro Day would be great for the community and very good to watch and I’m sure SW would be very competitive and have every opportunity to win

  2. What is the logic in not allowing SW to play private schools? The best general competition is in the private schools. Many of the best players go to the private schools for the competition. Most of the public school conferences only have 1-2 good teams in the conference on any given year. Do other schools such as Dudley, NW and Northern have the same policies?

  3. Who said they can’t play private schools?? If Westchester would’ve won that’s who they would’ve played. And Swest and Weslyan’s girls have played twice this year.

  4. I am guessing they meant would not schedule a private school as part of the normal out of conference schedule not referring to a tournament schedule. Considering how good of a team SW has had recently and this year, it does make you wonder about them not willing to schedule such teams. If you are that good, why not schedule up your competition?

  5. I know for a fact that its been said that SW will not schedule these teams in their regular schedule , basketball & baseball primarily. I’m sure it has to do with kids that have transferred out of SW to go to Wesleyan and to HPCA . Its a shame that these local schools cant get scheduled with one another. That would be a big revenue game for the host school. Hopefully things will change and they will start playing the local private schools but apparently there are some grudges being held is the only thing I can think of. I guess the athletic administration would be the one to ask on why they wont schedule these teams.
