College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 78, Randolph 50

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Ymani Breedlove and Kate Clark both tied career-highs in scoring as the Quakers cruised to a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Randolph College, 78-50.

Randolph took an early 10-9 lead with 3:25 left in the first quarter before the Quakers produced the first of two big runs in the first half, holding the WildCats scoreless for 5:00 minutes spanning the remainder of the first quarter and the start of the second period. Guilford closed the first quarter with four straight field goals, all in the paint, as part of a 13-0 run. The Quakers poured a second run upon the WildCats later in the second quarter, producing a 15-0 run for a 4:25 span in the second portion of the period. Guilford claimed their largest lead of 24 points twice in the final minute of the period.

The WildCats held an 8-6 advantage in the paint in the third quarter as Guilford began playing their bench for a large portion of the period. The WildCats closed the lead within 18 before the Quakers’ advantage reached as large as 26 points to close the frame. The Quakers’ lead never dipped below 22 points as both sides played reserves to close out the contest.

Five Quakers enjoyed double-figure scoring efforts as Breedlove and Clark scored 11 points to match their career high while Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie County) also added 11 points. Breedlove added 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, scoring nine points and pulling down 11 rebounds in the first half alone. Clark also added six rebounds, a career high. Heaven Walters (Yadkinville, N.C./Starmount) added 11 points while Lauren Ramsey scored ten points on five-of-ten shooting.

Korin Harris led the WildCats with 16 points on seven-of-16 shooting and five rebounds while Hope Randolph came off the bench to score 12 points and pull down six rebounds.

The Quakers shot 43.5 percent for the contest on the power of 55.9 percent first-half shooting. The WildCats shot 34.5 percent thanks to a 44.8 percent second-half effort after being held to 24.1 percent shooting in the first half. Guilford’s shooters were active beyond the arc, shooting seven-of-19 from three-point range while holding Randolph to one-of-seven shooting from distance.

Guilford out-rebounded the WildCats, 47-33, thanks to 17 offensive rebounds which the Quakers converted into 18 second-chance points. The Quakers dominated the WildCats in the paint, 44-22. After four early first-quarter turnovers, the Quakers limited themselves to 13 total turnovers while the WildCats committed 17. The Quakers took advantage of the WildCats’ miscues by scoring 19 points off turnovers compared to six points for Randolph off Guilford miscues.

The Quakers (10-1, 4-0 ODAC), off to their best start since 1994-1995, prepare for a key ODAC contest against Eastern Mennonite University Saturday at 4:30 p.m. inside Ragan-Brown Field House.
