Hite Hits Late Three To Lift Pride Women Past Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – Alexis Hite hit a go-ahead three-point shot with 8.3 seconds left to give the Greensboro College women’s basketball team a 77-74 conference victory Friday against Averett University.

After falling behind 9-0 to open the game, Greensboro (7-5, 3-0 USA South) outscored the Cougars 10-4 over the final six minutes of the first period to pull within 18-13. Courtney Pearsal, Alyssa Carbone, Monica Smalls, and Hite each recorded one basket during the run.

Averett (5-5, 0-2 USA South) then extended its lead back out to nine before the Pride used a 12-2 run to establish its first lead at 25-24 with six minutes remaining in the first half. Marla Crawford and Hite each tallied five of the points.

Averett tied the game again at 30 before Greensboro went into the half with a 34-30 lead.

Following intermission, the Pride established its largest lead of the game at 46-38. However, the Cougars rallied once again to tie at 49.

With less than a minute to play and the Pride leading 74-72, Samm Chandler recorded her fourth field goal of the day for Averett to set up the game-winning possession.

“Following the tying basket I did not know whether to call a timeout or let the play go on,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. He let the team play.

Kamerin Williams got the ball inbounds to Janae Gill-Woods, who found Hite wide open on the left side of the three-point arc. Hite caught the ball in stride and drained the three.

“After the three by Alexis, I was glad we did not call a timeout,” Tuggle said. “We did a good job getting the ball quickly up the court, found an open shot, and Alexis knocked it down.”

Averett used its final timeout to try to set up a tying play. The Cougars got off two long shots but could not covert either.

“We played really well despite our slow start,” Tuggle said. “Averett came out very physical, and we struggled with that on the defensive end.

“We have relied on our ability to score points so far this season, but we have to do a much better job on the defensive side of the ball. Overall, I was pleased with our team performance, but we still have a lot of room to grow and get better.”

Hite finished the afternoon with a team-high 26 points while collecting four rebounds. Marla Crawford (11) was the only other Greensboro player to score in double figures. Williams led the Pride with eight rebounds.

Greensboro College will return to action at 5:30 Wednesday when it hosts the Monarchs of Methodist University. For more information on Pride women’s basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.

Pride Wrestling Drops Four Duals At Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Greensboro College wrestling team went 0-4 Friday at the Coker College Duals.

The Pride fell to Southeastern University (36-12), UNC-Pembroke (55-0), Belmont Abbey (49-6), and the host Cobras (46-3).

“After a slow start this morning in our first match against Southeastern, I was pleased how our guys battled back in the following rounds,” Head Coach Erik Wince said. “While the scoreboards did not reflect a lot of wins, our guys put up a much better fight against some very tough Division II competition.

“We have a lot to work on, and the No. 1 goal of the second half of the season is to just be tougher both physically and mentally.”

Drew Chappell led the way for Greensboro on the afternoon as he recorded two wins in four matches. Mykel Williams and Johnathan Bennett also picked up one win each.

The Pride will return to action at 2 p.m. Jan. 17 when they host Ferrum College and Huntingdon College in the team’s first home match in two months. For more information on Greensboro College wrestling, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
