Elon Track and Field Begins 2016 at Wake Forest Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team resumes its indoor season this Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Wake Forest Invitational inside the JDL Fast Track Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C.

In Competition This Week
The Phoenix will send 22 athletes to the meet on Saturday. Additionally, selected members of the Elon men’s cross country program will also race at the meet.

Last Time Out
Elon opened its indoor season on Dec. 5, at the JDL Kickoff Classic with two athletes setting new school records. Sydney Griffin broke her own record in the 60-meter hurdles with her time of 8.53 in the preliminary round and was fourth overall in the finals.

Jen Esposito was the runner-up in the 500-meter dash after the Mansfield, Mass., native clocked in a school-record time 1:15.63 in the race.

In the shot put, the Phoenix throwers were equally impressive as Elon swept the podium. Bre’anna Warren took home individualist honors with her toss of 43′ 6.50″ (13.27m), edging out teammate Majayla Holland by .02m. Holland ended up with a new personal-record throw of 43′ 5.75″ (13.25m), breaking into the top-five marks in school history. Bryanna Hames rounded out the top-three for Elon with her heave of 42′ 11″ (13.08m).

The Phoenix captured the team title at the meet with 68 points, edging out runner-up Charlotte who finished with 55.

The Phoenix is back for its third meet at the JDL Fast Track Complex next Sunday, Jan. 24, for the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge.
