GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trever Hyatt (Hickory, N.C./East Burke) scored a season-high 20 points and Will Freeman added 18 in Guilford College’s 81-69 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball win over visiting Shenandoah University Saturday.
The Quakers (10-5, 5-1 ODAC) shot just under 54 percent from the floor for the game, including a season-high 53.3 percent (8-15) from three-point range. Hyatt connected on five-of-seven shots from long range for his first 20-point game of the season. He had 11 first-half points and Freeman had 10 at the break, which helped the hosts open a 40-29 halftime lead.
Shenandoah (3-12, 0-6 ODAC) suffered its eighth straight loss despite a game-high 32 points by Malcolm Clark. Clark and teammate Antwan Pittman both came off the bench in the first half after the Quakers opened a 12-0 lead. The pair got the Hornets back into the game and combined to score all of Shenandoah’s first-half points. They combined to score all of Shenandoah’s points until Thomas Walker hit an inside basket 2:05 into the second half.
Guilford led by as many as 18 points in the second half, but Shenandoah’s Pittman and Clark helped the Hornets back to within 69-61 with 5:52 remaining. He scored all of the Hornets’ points in the final 5:52, but the Quakers made all eight free throws in the final 3:22 to seal the win.
Guilford’s Alston Thompson (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) notched his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Jarrod Rogers (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) added 11 points and a game-best seven assists. Zachary Houston tallied three points, eight boards, six assists and a steal in 37 minutes. The Quakers held a 41-26 rebounding edge and outscored Shenandoah inside, 34-16.
Clark knocked down five three-pointers and shot 11-for-15 from the floor in his 32-point outing. Pittman had four trifectas and finished with 20 points. Gabriel Gonzalez led Shenandoah’s rebounders with seven.
