BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A dozen third quarter points from freshman Lindsey Edwards sparked the High Point University women’s basketball team to a 69-55 triumph at Campbell on Sunday.
The Panthers (5-11, 4-3) led the Camels (7-9, 2-5) by one at halftime, but outscored the home team 23-10 in the third quarter to take command of the contest.
“Winning on the road is something we talked about needing to figure out how we can do it,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said about her team’s first road victory of the season. “We considered it a must-win game and we really came out to play.”
Edwards’ career-high 19 points led a freshmen class that scored 58 of the team’s 69 points. Freshmen Emma Bockrath (14 points), Haleigh Hatfield (11 points) and Shea Morgan (10 points) gave the Purple & White four scorers in double figures.
On the glass, Hatfield (12 rebounds) and Morgan (nine boards) posted career highs as the Panthers earned a +15 margin (49-34). HPU tallied 19 assists as Bockrath and junior Kaylah Keys each recorded six.
Defensively, HPU held Campbell to a 32.7 shooting percentage while knocking down 42.6 of its shots on the other end. In the critical 23-10 third quarter, the Panthers hit 11-of-19 shots while limiting the Camels to just two field goals.
After the Camels opened the game with a 12-2 run (3:41), HPU turned up their fullcourt pressure to cause three straight turnovers to build momentum. The defensive energy sparked an 11-0 run featuring buckets from five different players to take a 13-12 edge. However, CU added free throws with two seconds left to take a 14-13 lead after the first frame.
The two squads traded baskets early in the second quarter before Morgan gave the Purple & White the lead with a pair or free throws at the 7:02 mark (17-16). From there, neither team could build a lead larger than four as HPU took a 29-28 lead into the break.
Campbell opened the scoring in the third quarter to even the score at 29-all. But Edwards got going for the Panthers scoring six of the Panthers next eight points as High Point surged to a 37-30 advantage with 7:06 on the clock.
Later, Harris added a three-pointer to extend the lead to eight (40-32, 6:30). Morgan converted a layup before Edwards scored six more points as HPU’s advantage swelled to 15 points (52-37, 1:00).
The Camels opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to pull within six at 52-46. However, Bockrath responded with five straight points to regain a double-digit lead (57-46, 6:25). From there, the Panthers wouldn’t let Campbell get any closer as they cruised to a 69-55 triumph.
The Panthers stay on the road on Tuesday to play at Winthrop at 7:00 p.m.
