The Cowboys played host to their city rivals, the Tigers of Ragsdale on this cold night. This rivalry has been owned recently by the Cowboys as they have won 9 of the last 10, including the last 7 in a row in this heated rivalry.

The last time the Tigers were able to beat the Cowboys was in January of 2012. The Tigers recently rebounded from a 2 game conference skid with a non-conference blowout of Thomasville. The Cowboys came into tonight looking to keep the train rolling and stay perfect on the year.

The opening minutes of the game was eerily similar to the weather outside. Cold and ugly. Neither team could gain any traction nor put the ball in the basket. It wasn’t until a 3 pointer by the Tigers at the 5:52 mark that anyone got on the board. The teams traded baskets from there, with Southwest tying the game at 5. Once again the rivals traded baskets again to make it 7-7 at 4:23. The Cowboys finally put multiple possessions together to make it 13-7 around the 3:20 mark. Southwest seemed to maintain control and closed the opening frame at 18-9.

The second quarter opened with a spark for the home team as they jumped right out with 10 straight points to make the count 28-9 with 5:20 on the clock. After the Tigers timeout, they responded well and outscored the Cowboys in the final minutes of the half to make the halftime score 38-24.

The second half opened similar to the second quarter, with the Cowboys jumping all over the Tigers. Solid defense led to easy looks to the tune of an 14-1 run making it 52-25. The Tigers slowed the bleeding with 2 points, but from there Southwest’s Orlando Smith took control with a 4 point play, followed by 2 more 3 pointers in consecutive possessions to blow the lead to 64-30, until a late basket just before the quarter ended at 64-32.

The final frame was more like the opening quarter. The Tigers took advantage of sloppy, disorganized ball to chip away. Ragsdale outworked and outscored the Cowboy bench in the final stanza, but nevertheless it was too little too late as Southwest cruised to the 77-52 victory to remain perfect on the year at 17-0, and 3-0 in the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference.

Ragsdale was led by Kyle Watkins with 14. Southwest was led by Orlando Smith with 25, Kobe Langley with 15, and Kameron Langley with 14.
