Six Event Titles Spark Elon Track and Field at UNCG Spartan Team Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Six event wins fueled the Elon University women’s track and field team to the meet title at the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge, today, Jan. 24, inside the JDL Fast Track Complex.

Elon took team honors and outscored other notable schools such as Wake Forest, Campbell, Davidson, USC Upstate and host UNCG in dual meet competition. It’s the second team title in three indoor meets so far on the young season. The Phoenix also won the meet at the JDL Kickoff Classic in its indoor season-opener on Dec. 5.

Senior Sydney Griffin had two individual victories in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. Griffin picked up where she left off from last week’s record-breaking meet as the Marietta, Ga., native ran a time of 8.68 in the 60-meter hurdles. She followed with a 25.20 in the 200-meter dash and was also third in the 60-meter dash with her time of 7.81.

Jen Esposito also continued her great indoor season by winning the 800-meter run. The Mansfield, Mass., native clocked in the second-best indoor time in school history with a 2:13.04. Esposito was also part of the Phoenix 4×400-meter relay team along with Lydia Laws, Lauren Brzozowski and Desiree Ross that won the event title with a time of 3:54.07 – third-best time in school history.

Brzozowski won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.22 with Samantha Brown taking fourth overall after crossing the line at 59.61. Junior Carrie Abraham took the win in the triple jump with a new personal-best leap of 39’ 3.25” (11.97m).

Sophomore Brigid Brennan was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter run with her time of 10:05.25. Coralea Geraniotis was third in the race with a time of 10:12.57 with teammates Kaitlin Snapp (10:18.60) and Carolyn Hopkins (10:27.75) taking fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the pole vault, both Ellie Bennett and Nicole Karabas cleared the bar at 10’ 6” (3.20m), but Bennett finished ahead of her teammate in the standings at fifth overall on fewer attempts. Junior Briana O’Grady was Elon’s top finisher in the weight throw at 47’ 9” (14.55m).

Elon competes in its final scheduled indoor meet inside the JDL Fast Track Complex next weekend, Jan. 29-30, for the Camel City Invitational. Select other members of the team will compete at the Darius Dixon Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
