After a week off from school and practice, the Cowboys had to jump right back into game action against conference foe High Point Central.

The Bison have had a roller coaster of a year and came into tonight after picking up their first regular season conference win since February of 2014, as well as a non-conference win over Northern.

The Cowboys came into tonight looking to maintain control of the conference and remain perfect on the year. How would the teams respond to the inability to practice for a week?

The game opened up with the expected rust on both sides. The teams traded baskets as well as missed opportunities. The lead changed sides until a Cowboy 3 pointer gave them the lead for good at 12-10 at the 1:25 mark. Southwest managed a 5-1 spurt to close out the opening quarter up 17-11 despite the sloppy play.

The opening 4 minutes of the second stanza were quite the roller coaster. Southwest got a basket, the Bison hit a 3 pointer. The Cowboys got a 4 point play by Orlando Smith, then a steal and layup by the Cowboys got the margin to 25-14. However, sloppy play and poor decision making led to a Bison 9-0 run to make it a 25-23 game by the 4:06 mark. Once again an Orlando Smith 3 pointer helped the Cowboys stop the bleeding, as the Cowboys started to get a little traction in the game. With under a minute to play in the half, Southwest got it back up to 39-28, but a late 3 pointer by the Bison put the halftime tally at 39-31.

The third quarter was once again the difference for the Cowboys. The hosts clamped down on the defensive side of the ball and swarmed the Bison all over the court. The team quickness led to open looks and easy transition baskets for the Cowboys as they outscored Central 24-6 in the frame including a buzzer beating 3 pointer to end the quarter at 63-37.

The final quarter was, unfortunately, similar to the opening of the game. Fortunately for the Cowboys, they played just enough defense and scored just enough points to keep the game well out of reach for the Bison as the Cowboys maintained their perfect record on the year with a convincing 78-49 victory.

The Bison were led by Jo’el Jenkins with 10 points. Southwest was led by Orlando Smith with 19 points (6 3’s), Kobe Langley with 15 points, Kaymon Mitchell with 13 points, and Keyshaun Langley with 11 points.

Southwest moves to 19-0 and 5-0 in the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference. High Point Central drops to 9-8 and 1-3 in Conference play. Up next for the Cowboys will be the start of back swing of Conference play with the Glenn Bobcats coming to the Ranch on Friday night.

  1. You really expect us to believe that you didn’t practice for a week?? Come on – no weather or exams will stop teams from practicing….legally!

  2. What’s your point? Any good player would find their way into the gym when the weather is bad. Considering that 3 of the main players live under the same roof, it does not take much to practice. SW could have taken the last month off and it would have not matter.
