Elon’s Irwin Honored as a Top 10 Under 10 Alumni (Men’s Soccer)

ELON – Elon University men’s soccer alum Clint Irwin ’11 was one of 10 honorees that was named a 2016 Top 10 Under 10 Alumni by the Office of Alumni Engagement and the Young Alumni Council.

The honorees are alumni who have graduated in the past 10 years, continuously achieve new levels of success, work to elevate their communities and are loyal alumni role models.

A political science major, Irwin was the starting goalkeeper of the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer (MLS) before being traded to Toronto FC earlier this month. While with the Rapids, Charlotte, N.C., native quickly established himself as one of the young netminders of the league, posting 10 shutouts during his first season and becoming only the third MLS keeper to record five shutouts in his first 10 career starts. He also helped aid the Rapids to an appearance in the MLS Cup playoffs.

With Colorado, Irwin made 92 appearances with a 30-39-23 record and registered 25 clean sheets across MLS league play, MLS Cup playoffs and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. He was named an All-Star this past season and was tabbed as the Rapids’ Fan Favorite in 2013 and 2015.

Irwin joins former Elon men’s soccer alum Daniel Lovitz on Toronto FC’s roster and as the only two active Phoenix players in the MLS. The pair played together as teammates at Elon in 2010.

Irwin and the other recipients will be honored during a ceremony on Saturday, April 2, in McKinnon Hall in the Moseley Center.
