College Men’s Basketball Final – Emory & Henry 81, Guilford 73 (overtime)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Myles Turner scored a game-high 26 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime, to lift visiting Emory & Henry College past Guilford College, 81-73, Wednesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball action.

Turner’s sixth and final trifecta of the night came at the 1:49 mark of overtime and broke the game’s 18th and final tie. After two Zachary Houston free throws brought the Quakers (13-9, 8-5 ODAC) back to within one, the Wasps’ John Shelor drained his fifth three-pointer of the night, which made it a two-possession game with 62 seconds remaining.

Guilford could not answer and was forced to foul. Emory & Henry made all six free throws in the final 28 seconds to secure its first victory at Guilford since 2004.

Turner, who scored his 1,000th career point early in the first half, had 16 points at the break. He made four-of-six three-pointers to lead Emory & Henry’s long-range attack. The Wasps knocked down 11-of-19 first-half threes, including Chase Branscomb’s bucket at the buzzer that gave the visitors a 45-43 halftime lead. Emory & Henry’s 11 first-half three-pointers offset seven turnovers and Guilford’s 53.6 percent field-goal shooting in the opening frame.

Guilford scored 10 of the first 14 second-half points and had a 56-52 lead after Justen Best’s putback basket with 15:13 remaining in regulation. Best answered Clif Conley’s fourth three-pointer of the night at the 11:34 mark, which restored a four-point Quakers’ edge. Guilford was plagued by five-for-12 second-half free-throw shooting that kept the hosts from building their advantage.

Guilford’s Alston Thompson made one-of-two free throws with 26 seconds left to tie the score for the 17th time. Emory & Henry’s Turner drove the lane in regulation’s waning seconds, but his shot was blocked by Will Freeman and the teams headed to overtime tied at 67-67.

Emory & Henry’s Shelor shot five-of-eight from long range and scored 17 points. Conley’s four-of-seven three-point shooting helped him to 14 points off the bench. Brandon Self scored just five points, but delivered key minutes down the stretch and a game-high nine rebounds. The Wasps shot 16-for-32 from three-point land, compared to Guilford’s four-for-17 shooting from beyond the arc.

Guilford’s Thompson tallied 15 points and nine boards, both team highs. Freeman added 13 points and Best scored 12. The trio helped a strong bench performance that produced 45 of Guilford’s 73 points.

The Quakers host ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon College Saturday (2/13) in their final regular-season home game at 2:00 p.m.
