Game Report on Northwest Guilford at Southwest Guilford Boys Basketball:Vikings hand Cowboys first loss of the season(Gore-NWG with 21 and Smith-SWG with 27 lead combatants)

Northwest Guilford 87, Southwest Guilford 80

It was an emotional night here at the Ranch as Southwest honored it’s graduating Senior class. Also before tip off, the Cowboys commemorated Junior Kameron Langley (and defending Conference POY) reaching the 1,000 point mark for his career in front of the home crowd. On top of that, it was a rematch between the top two teams in the Piedmont Triad Conference as the Vikings of Northwest looked to seek some revenge as well as be the first knock off the unbeaten Cowboys.

The Vikings have won the four in a row coming into tonight, and the Cowboys have kept the perfect record intact. Would the emotions of senior night be too much for the Cowboys to overcome? A win tonight would clinch the regular season championship for the fourth consecutive season.

The starting lineup of Seniors Orlando Smith, Kaymon Mitchell, Andre Jones, and Mantriel Reaves with Junior Kameron Langley got off to a strong start for the Cowboys. Southwest was on the board first, but Northwest quickly tied it up at 2 apiece. Senior Orlando Smith caught fire in the opening frame with 19 first quarter points with 5 three pointers and the Cowboys seemed to be running on all cylinders going up 29-15 at the close of the first.

The second quarter opened with Southwest still in control and by midway through the frame the margin was 41-21. Unfortunately for the hosts however, the engine light came on as the Vikings seized control going on a 14-5 run to close the half at 46-35.

The third quarter was owned by the Vikings as their determination to knock off the defending champions was undeniable. Uncharacteristic sloppy possessions and mental lapses on the defensive side of the ball led to a blitz of an offensive outpouring for the visitors as they took a 66-55 lead headed into the final frame.

The check engine light was glowing brightly still for the Cowboys as the engine seemed to be overheated as the lead peaked at 74-57 with 5:22 to play. On two separate times the Cowboys got the margin down to 6, but each time a defensive mistake led to an open basket for the Vikings. A three pointer cut it to 85-80 with 16 seconds to play, but the Cowboys couldn’t find a basket as the game closed at 87-80 in favor of the Vikings.

Southwest losses it’s first conference game in 2 years, and fails to clinch the regular season title. Northwest was led by Jalen Gore with 21 points and 17 huge points by Reggie Davis. Southwest was led by Orlando Smith with (27, 3 Rebs, 2 Stls), Kobe Langley with (22, 5 Rebs, 3 Stls), and Kameron Langley with (13, 8 Rebs, 7 Asts, 5 Stls).

Southwest drops to 22-1 overall and 8-1 in Conference play. The Cowboys close out the regular season at High Point Central still with a chance to clinch the Piedmont Triad Conference for the 4th consecutive year.
