Elon Track and Field: Records Fall on Day One at Spire Institute Division I Challenge

GENEVA, Ohio. – New school records from seniors Sydney Griffin and Tereza Novota highlighted the opening day for the Elon University women’s track and field team at the Spire Institute Division I Challenge on Friday, Feb. 12.

Griffin broke her second indoor school-record of the season as the Marietta, Ga., native clocked a time of 24.57 in the race. She would finish 10th overall in the event featuring some of the top competitors in the country.

Novotna also earned a top-10 overall finish with her new school-record time of 16:40.52 in the 5,000-meter run. Teammate Shelby Cuddeback was the next runner for the Phoenix to cross the line with her new personal-best time of 17:05.73 – now the third fastest in school history. Cuddeback’s time also qualified her for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships.

Sophomore Emily Dixon was third in the women’s pentathlon with a new personal-best mark of 3,539 points. She has also qualified for the ECACs. Nicole Karabas set a new personal-best mark in the pole vault as she cleared the bar at 10’ 6” (3.37m) – the third-best indoor performance in school history.

The Phoenix concludes the meet tomorrow, Feb. 13.
