GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team earned a hard-fought 5-1 victory on Saturday afternoon against USC Upstate at the Starmount Country Club.
Chris Humphreys clinched the victory for the Phoenix with a win at No. 5 singles. The Phoenix moves above .500 with the victory improving to 4-3 overall. The match only featured singles play and doubles wasn’t necessary after Elon clinched the victory.
Highlights
Mario Paccini earned his third singles victory of the season with a 7-6 (10-3), 7-6 (10-4) victory at No. 1 singles to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead in the match. Lenhard Haupt responded earning the Spartan’s lone point in the match with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position.
Salvador Mijares answered, rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles to give Elon a 2-1 lead. Robert Lindgren got the Phoenix within clinching distance in the match, 3-1, with a 7-6 (10-1), 2-6, 6-4 victory at the third position.
Humphreys then clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No 5 singles to give the Phoenix a 4-1 lead. Charlie Sullivan finished his match on the sixth court with a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) win to complete Elon’s 5-1 victory.
